2019 UCL Final : The African Flavour

2019 UCL Final : The African Flavour

This year’s UEFA Champions League final coming up in Madrid on June 1st between Liverpool and Totteham will bring on the African flavour as no fewer than seven or more players from both sides with African blood running in their veins will be on parade.

Africans have never been missing in historic games of this magnitude. Recall that the Nigerian duo of George Finidi and Nwankwo Kanu were key squad members that brought glory to AFC Ajax Amsterdam in 1995. Abedi Pele of Ghana was a leading light when Olympique Msrseille ruled Europe in the 1993 edition of the competition. We can go on and on….

This year’s edition of the UCL final brings the attraction and fond memories of the African game as football fans and pundits in the continent will be glued to their TV sets to watch this final. Arguably, the performances of these African stars who will be on parade will form part of the opinion of the voters for the prestigious African Footballer of the Year Award which experts say is between the duo of Salah and Mane….But the 2019 AFCON is also a key factor.

●Mohamed Salah is Egyptian international. He has been the shinning light of Liverpool FC attack in the last three seasons. He is already dreaming of the UCL title after injury stopped him midway in the final of the 2018 edition of the competition won by Real Madrid. This could be his year.

●Sadio Mane is Senegalese international. He has been very consistent and influential this season leading the attack of the Reds while the eight-game goals drought of his fellow African, Mo Salah lasted. He surely will have fun in the final of this year’s edition of the UCL.

●Naby Keita is Guinean international. He has scored crucial goals towards the end of the season before injury knocked him out. However, the attacking midfielder will be a medal winner should the kops lift the UCL.

Liverpool’s Divock Okoth Origi

●Divock Okoth Origi’s parents are Kenyan. In fact he is son of former Kenyan international Mike Origi. Divock however is a Belgian international having taken up Belgisn nationality. He plays as a forward for Liverpool FC in England. Divock scored two of the four goals that bundled FC Barcelona out of the UCL semis. He has been a fringe player under Jurgen Klopp.

●Dele Ali is an English international who plays as a forward for Tottenham Hotspur. His father is Nigerian. He has been a cult figure for Tottenham since he broke into the first team some five years ago.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli

●Moussa Sissoko is a French international who plays for Tottenham Hotspur as a box-to-box midfielder in the centre of the pitch, and is capable of playing in either a holding midfield role , or even as an attacking midfielder or right winger. He was a key figure in the defeat of Ajax in Amsterdam. His parents are Malians

Tottenham Duo -Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko

●Victor Mugubi Wanyama is Kenyan international who plays as a defensive midfielder for Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur. He is captain of the Kenyan national team. He was instrumental to the 3-2 victory over Ajax in Amsterdam.
