There are strong indications of a link between the latest move by Lagos lawmakers to impeach Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode and the disrupted governorship rally held at the popular Skypower Ground, Ikeja weeks ago whuch left one dead and several others injured. The rally described by the media as “deadly” could be one of the major pulls behind the lawmakers latest impeachment move.
Yours Sincerely gathered that the outcome of that rally deeply angered the hierarchy and leadership of the governing party, All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos leading to the setting up of an investigation team to look into the chaos and find out its remote causes and how to curb a repeat of such shameful incident which witnessed a chieftain of the NURTW, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya aka MC Oluomo stabbed and rushed to the famous EKO Hospital before being flown abroad.
The secret investigating team concluded that thugs loyal to Gov. Ambode caused the crisis since they couldn’t stand the sight of Ambode lifting the hand of Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu in the rally as the man to succeed him in office, come May 29, 2019.
“The highpoint of the rally would have been when Ambode would present Sanwo-Olu officially to Lagosians present at the rally as his successor. That was the plot behind the rally by the party’s chieftains”, my source revealed.
“Thugs believed to be loyal to Ambode allegedly disrupted proceedings which led to sporadic shootings and chaos as thugs loyal to Sanwo-Olu fought back in a kind of reprisal attack. The disruption of the rally and the bad press it brought to the party was a huge embarrassment to the party’s leadership which vowed to investigate the incident.
“Though, Ambode clearly had no hand in the actions of the thugs who disrupted the rally as revealed by the investigation, but the chieftains of the party felt his issue has caused enough troubles for the party and its leadership hence the renewed move by the lawmakers to impeach him. This is to also avoid a repeat of such incident especially on election day.”
Meanwhile, the latest move to impeach Ambode is attracting concern among Lagosians most of who think, the party’s leadership is taken the issue too far and making an average Lagosian look less important. They say it is high handedness to plot the removal of the governor with less than three weeks to the election even as it is crystal clear that his case and fate has been sealed. This they argue could have a backlash effect on the APC in the election.
Reports say the lawmakers have given the governor a one week ultimatum to answer to allegation hinging on major infractions and gross violations over the state’s appropriation law.
