…AND THEIR CUPP RUNNETH OVER

By Desmond Ekwueme

…AND THEIR CUPP RUNNETH OVER

It took the coalition of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the seven “Rebel Governors” from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to form the All Progressives Party (APC) which flushed out the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan led PDP government in 2015.

One really wonders why the so called Coalition of United Peoples Party (CUPP) made up of about 40 political parties will need to gather just because of APC or President Muhammadu Buhari. This move shows clearly that the CUPP is already dead on arrival having also shown a clear sign of desperation, fear, weakness and incoherent proclivities. With this move, the CUPP is suggesting perhaps that it may even take the combination of the American Democrats and Republicans to defeat Buhari and APC come 2019 election. Many Nigerians never knew before now that Buhari was this powerful, strong, influential and deep rooted. Thank God that CUPP has revealed this to the world.

CUPP has by this gathering of strange bed jelly-hearted fellows told Nigerians and indeed the watching world that perhaps no political party in the country is prepared for next election hence they are all seeking alignment and coalition. Again, this could be a pointer that if the so called CUPP fails in its already dead bid to get APC rid of power in 2019, Nigeria could automatically be tilting towards a one party state. You ask, how? Why? The answer is simply that, the lame ducks and toothless bulldogs would be running for cover seeking for insurance like many PDP members did and are still doing since May 29, 2015.

One naturally would have thought that the resurgence of the PDP coupled with the crises rocking the APC should be a solid pedestal for another very strong political party to emerge. A party with national spread and even interest. A party that knows what it wants….and not a party that will start fighting over positions and offices after winning an election. But what we have presently is a gang of hustlers, jobbers and hangers-on seeking for vacancies when they lack the prerequisite experience, knowledge, plans and vision to pursue their likely nightmare called dream of occupying the illusion termed vacancies.
Sadly, most of those clamouring for CUPP are the same persons who somehow have had a hand in the terrible situation our beloved country find herself. When Nigerians heard of the revival of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), they took its seriousness and existence with a pinch of salt knowing that former President Olusegun Obasanjo came up with the Third Force which metamorphosed into Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) and later African Democratic Congress (ADC) yet nothing meaningful is coming from the party which is now part of the CUPP arrangement.

Truth is Nigeria politicians keep fumbling, stumbling and falling. They are after power yet they don’t have a single idea or knowledge of what to do with it when they are sworn into offices. They don’t know that power is service to the people and humanity. To them, power is the authority to control all hence, their desperation to oust whoever is in power by hook or crook to occupy and destroy the people with poverty, ethnic bigotry and cleansing and religious fundamentalism.

Until proven, this CUPP does not seem healthy and serious enough to give Nigerians any nutritional drink of hope of better days ahead. This CUPP may have runneth over….but I doubt if it has any iota of goodness and mercy to follow Nigerians all the days of their lives.
