It was different atmosphere at the Muri Okunola Park in Victoria Island on the 4th of August, 2018 with the B.A.D Gang. The Bikers with Attitude and Determination held their second edition of their annual event tagged “Jollof Rice and Palmie (Palmwine)” at the park. The event which turned out to be bigger than the first edition (10th August, 2017) brought bikers from all parts of Lagos and outside.
The whole arena was filled with bikers, friends and fans. Music was supplied by a stand-by DJ who kept on dishing both old and new school tracks. Also there to add more spice to the show was the Kegites club who came all the way from University of Ibadan. Kegites club, a club for palm wine drinkers who play different types of music to entertain themselves and anyone who cares to listen.
This year’s event had Monster Energy drink, one of the sponsors on ground to energize the event. The sound of different types of bikers filled the air as the bikers had to “rev” their bikes showcasing the power and beauty of their machines. Speaking to one of the B.A.D gang members, Tolu, she said “I don’t just ride bikes, I also do races”. According to another B.A.D member, Tolu is one of the best female biker in the country and in November, there is going to be a bike race in Benin City, 2018. The bikes were of different types and models ranging from mountain bikes to sports bikes. All the motor bike manufacturers such as Kawasaki, Ducati, Honda, Toyota etc were all represented through their products.
The motor bike races have been on for about 5 years with little recognition. With more promotion, the country will soon have their own televised and sponsored motorbike racing events. Look out for the full coverage of the event in November on this platform.
The Female Biker Initiative known as FBI is an all female bike group who assist women with cancer. The move from hospital to hospital all over the country and assist women to pay for their treatments, pay for their drugs and organize free check-ups. Also on ground to support the events was a bicycle group known as King peddlers. This group in their orange on black outfit has their own association with their own charity projects. According to one of their members, in two weeks time they will be riding to Ile-Ife to see the Ooni of Ife and then do one or two projects.
Bikers associations in Nigeria such as B.A.D gang and FBI have charity projects they run to assist communities. It is not all about riding but also giving out to the people. We need to support and recognize these associations and understand where they stand.
