Best Training methods –Practice with a mad man

I was watching the news two days ago when I saw one of my friends who was also my secondary school classmate. He was in the news for an achievement. It was his style-to always be in the news and centre of attraction.

Emmanuel (not real name) was known for his long legs during our school days. It was not the length of his legs that made him popular but the speed in a 400 meters race. When we were in SSS 1 (Senior Secondary School, class one) Emmanuel was to represent our house in the inter-house sports event in the 400m race. He had always been the best right from junior section. This was his grand opportunity to beat the school number one champion Dagogo (not real name).

As we walked out of the school gate after practice towards Emmanuel’s house, Emmanuel sought for my advice.

“Krakpor, I need your advice on how to beat Dagogo” Emmanuel said

“It is easy. You have to train hard with us”

“No. You guys are too slow. I need someone who is faster”

I began to ransack my brain thinking of who to suggest, then the right person came to me like a vision. Standing ahead of us was Lema –the madman. He was the best option for this training. Lema was about 40 years old and had the stature of a weightlifter.  The story was that he used to be a boxer until drugs made him mad.

“I have an idea” I said

“Let’s hear it”

I told him what he needed to do and he seemed to like the idea. All that was needed was a course and Emmanuel’s estate (it was a small estate with bungalows) was the best option because it  was bounded by four streets and fenced round with wire mesh. The idea was simple. We will stand in front of the gate and make fun of Lema and then run into the estate, shut the gate while Emmanuel will run so that the chase will begin.

We (I, Emmanuel and two other classmates) came out and shouted “Megede” (Lema hated to be called that name). He immediately turned around and saw us. He ran towards us and according to the plan we ran into the estate and shut the gate while Emmanuel ran along the fence. Lema gave Emmanuel a hot chase while we also ran inside the estate with wire fence separating us. We kept on cheering as Emmanuel ran as if he was DC comic character “The Flash”.

As Emmanuel ran .I noticed something had changed.

Lema was no longer chasing Emmanuel instead he chose to run in the opposite direction. I signaled the other guys and we tried shouting out Emmanuel to stop but instead he kept running. He thought our shouting was to encourage him to continue. By the time Emmanuel would realize what we were trying to tell him, it was already too late. It was a hard punch that stopped him. Lema –the mad man pounced on him and dealt him several blows that the greatest boxers will admire him. With his last strength Emmanuel managed to climb over the fence into the estate to escape further pounding.

The next day when our coach did not see Emmanuel during the training session I the only one who will know his whereabouts.

“Krakpor, why is Emmanuel not here?” He asked

“Coach, something terrible happened” I replied

“Really? What happened?”

“He got hit by a truck”

There was no way I could tell the coach that it was my idea to practice with a mad man or else I would end up just like Emmanuel after several beatings from the school.

If it were you, would you tell the truth? Catch you next week.
