Cooper test is a test of physical fitness. It was designed by Kenneth H. Cooper in 1968 for US military use. In the original form, the point of the test is to run as far as possible within 12 minutes.
The now famous 800 meters trek of President Muhammadu Buhari from the Prayer Ground where he performed the rites of slaughtering a ram for the Eid-il-Kabir celebration back to his private residence in Daura has come under great debate and scathing criticisms among Nigerians especially in the social media. The trek could now go for a Cooper test since that is literally the interpretation given by those who pulled the stunt. They wanted to prove to Nigerians that Mr. President is as fit as fiddle.
Those who think such report or story did Mr. President huge favour by boosting his image especially ahead of the 2019 election are still giving themselves big pats on the back for what they call “brilliant public relations stuff”. Those who think this gimmick has done his image more harm than good insist that it was a very wrong stunt….and those who sold it should be adequately sanctioned . I think I go with the latter.
Why on earth would anyone be suggesting that an 800 metres trek was a herculean task for Buhari….and as a result if he pulled through, it calls for plaudits? Has it degenerated to this ridiculous yet annoying level? Agreed that his health challenges once raised genuine concern among well meaning Nigerians even as it has given critics room to think that he is unfit to run for 2019 election. But that should not make his staff or anyone for that matter create an impression that an 800 meters walk was a big success for Mr. President. That is scandalous and unacceptable. We won’t just fold our arms and close our eyes to allow some I TOO KNOWS rubbish our President all in the name of protecting his interest, laundering his image or playing useless politics. I am not a politician neither do I enjoy the madness going on in our political terrain. But that does not make me a “sidon look Nigerian”.
This stupid stunt sincerely cast a shadow on the health status of PMB even as those who pulled the stunt won’t appreciate, accept or believe.
I may not be better than those managing Mr. President’s image and information but I feel pained that they have most times played to the gallery thus, allowing the political situations and especially the comments and actions of the opposition to dictate their operational tunes. Honestly, if you ask me, I will say, they don’t need it. They need to concentrate and focus on their jobs. A line should be drawn between playing politics and being professional in the discharge of their duties. Without sounding immodest, I make bold to say they have wrongly mixed both hence they keep struggling to send the right signal or message to the public.
Recall when PMB returned from a prolonged medical vacation last year, how someone assumed to be very close to him said, rodents made Mr. President to operate from home as his office was attacked by rats, cockroaches and bedbugs which destroyed furnitures among other office interior decors while he was away. How can anyone say such in this age? Was he insinuating that rats have been living within and around the office of Mr. President yet no one has the duty of fumigating or cleaning the office? Or was he suggesting through such statement that the presidency is that dirty and unkempt?
What would have happened to those who pulled the 800 meters stunt if they had simply kept quiet? Why form activity when there is obviously none? Why this busybody approach to performing one’s duty? Why the “eye service”? Must you talk? Why don’t you leave Nigerians to judge the fitness of Mr. President through his perceived “long journey” by foot from prayer ground to his home? Why belittle the health status of Mr. President? Why ridicule his level of fitness by such statement which has attracted negatve comments from members of the public? Nigerians are no daft as some government officials or public office holders think. Some of these shameful acts and statements do more damage to the image of Mr. President than launder it.
This should be stopped forthwith. Abba Kyari, the Chief of Staff to Mr. President must wield the big stick henceforth to curb or curtail these ugly trend and development. However, the person who pulled this ugly and negative 800 meters trek stunt should be duly sanctioned especially if he or she is a presidency staff.
