The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship mega rally at the Sky Power Ground in Ikeja turned a killing field yesterday as three are feared dead and a chieftain of the NURTW Chief Musilu Akinsanya aka MC Oluomo is hospitalised at EKO Hospital following injury he sustained from a knife stab at the rally ground.
One can only imagine what is to come in weeks ahead leading to the election. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Ismaila Azeez aka Legacy, one of those wounded in the clash is dead. He is said to be a factional leader who is against the treatment meted out to Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode by the party’s leadership in the state.
Election campaign and campaign grounds should not be turned into killing fields. Of course, it is a known fact that sponsors of these political thugs use this means to scare away genuine politicians especially of the new breed stock who have good intensions for the people and country. Killings and violence like these naturally will panic the families of those attempting to venture into polutics as they would plead with their relatives not to dare the murky waters of politics. By this, the coast and atmosphere remains clear for the evil geniuses who keep commanding and running the affairs of the nation.
Truth is political violence should not be allowed in our country but it amazes me why Lagos with all her posture as the fastest developing city in the world would allow herself to be dragged in the mud of stories of political violence and killings. We all pride Lagos as the most developed and civilized city in Nigeria where decent politicians and people live. Lagos is also seen as one of the most peaceful cities in Nigeria but incidents like this sends a wrong impression of the city especially when it has political undertone.
Sadly and most ironic, the security agents present coupled with security team of Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode and those of APC governorship candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu among other top politicians present could not stop the mayhem nor match the firepower of the thugs who kept on shooting sporadically throughout the period to abruptly end the rally as politicians scampered to safety.
We must watch it. We need to be wary. If Lagos or Kano displays this kind of political gangsterism then it could have a bandwagon or multiplying effect across the country. This could spell doom for the 2019 election. Political thuggery should be condemned. But unfortunately no politician has spoken in condemnation of yesterday’s chaos. The simple interpretation to this is that they are the sponsors of these mayhem.
Perhaps yesterday’s event is another clear warning to those who allow themselves to be used by these politicians for peanuts. Interestingly, the politicians are “ferried” into safety by fully armed security personnel while the killing field is thrown open to and for the thugs to do battle. It baffles me how a man will sacrifice his God-given life for Satan to use. The alleged dead are gone forever but the politicians are alive to continue their careers. They will use looted wealth to recruit more willing thugs, arm them and pay peanuts into their accounts…and the madness continues like a recurring decimal.
We must understand that the world is watching as we approach February 2019.
