Certificate?…. Oh No, Not Again!!!

Desmond Ekwueme

Certificate?…. Oh No, Not Again!!!

President Muhammadu Buhari has told the umpire of the 2019 General Election, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that his credentials are in the custody of the Military High Command. This is already generating another round of heated debate as tongues are already wagging.
The body language of the other 91 political parties especially the major opposition (Peoples Democratic Party whose flagbearer, Abubakar Atiku has submitted his credentials alongside about 70 other candidates) is suggesting that Mr. President cannot be a sacred cow hence he should be subjected to same process and treatment like other candidates. The implication of this is that he must produce or provide his credentials especially his certificate….in this case his post primary or secondary school certificate which was the major result or credential he presented in 2015.
But come to think of it, why should INEC or anyone bother about Mr. President’s academic certificate or credentials, after all, he contested the 2015 Presidential election and won with or without it. It is reasonable to ask, where were those now agitating for his educational credentials when he contested that election? This certificate saga has been on for some time, yet, no one has successfully dragged our President to court to prove he has or has no educational certificate. In the western world, situations like this is better handled legally and by a court of competent jurisdiction if, he contravenes the constitution or electoral law. Why wait till after four years of his first term to repeat this same old story of no certificate or otherwise.
Must we ridicule our President assuming he truly does not have educational credentials? But he somehow managed to emerge our leader in an election he secured a landslide victory. Or du don’t he? Oh, I hear someone ask “Desmond, did I just hear you say, why are we ridiculing our President? Where were you Desmond, when Buhari told the world that Nigeria is CORRUPT thereby collectively rubbishing us? Where were you when he called our youths which includes you LAZY? Desmond, will you kindly stop this futile campaign or have you been bought over?” No, I have not and will not.
Hmmmm, I want to believe that Mr. President will be full of regrets for those mistakes by now, yes, now that he needs Nigerians more than ever before to actualize his second term agenda.
Sincerely, I think Mr. President shot himself on the toe severally apparently because he never knew things will get to this point. He probably didn’t foresee a tighter and fiercer election than the 2015 poll. But as a former combatant soldier he should have known that not all soldiers who fought in a war with him will be around or available to tell the tales of war or be readily available for another battle. Some will be no more, some will quit due to injury sustained in previous war and some will retire. It is the same in politics.

Not all those who joined forces with him to arrest power from PDP and Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 are still with him or will still be with him as he prepares for 2019 poll. Some have defected to the PDP, some to other parties and some simply walked away obviously dissatisfied with his administration. These have formed part of the pressure Mr. President didn’t forsee yet he is experiencing presently.
My appeal to those digging deep over this certificate or credentials brouhaha is to sheathe their swords and let’s have a smooth electoral and electioneering process after all, the election is just months away. Like Bongos Ikwue once sang and I reecho, “What’s gonna be is gonna be….What goes up must come down….What’s gonna be is gonna be….Ain’t nothing you can do about it”
How I wish there was no hunger and starvation in the country. How I wish, global financial agencies had not described Nigeria as the world capital or headquarter of poverty. How I wish world leaders did not project that by 2050 half of the world’s poorest people will live in Nigeria. How I wish, power was stable to help small scale businesses grow and create the base and conducive environment for industrial revolution of the country. How I wish the rate of unemployment is not this high. How I wish there are no killings across the country. How I wish the herdsmen never had a free day killing Nigerians like rats….and how I wish Nigerians could afford three square meals on their menu tables daily….. Perhaps if all these anomalies were in the positive and normal nobody would have remembered the educational certificate of Mr. President or issues surrounding it. Nobody would have even bothered to know who the President is or where he hails from.
It is because we missed our priorities as a nation and allowed the political class to destroy our system and values which includes our educational system and culture of sincerity and merit that landed us in this certificate maladies. Remember it was NYSC certificate saga that disgraced our London trained former Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun. Our Communications Minister, Adebayo Shittu is still licking the wounds and bruises he sustained from critics over a similar case.
