Deceits of 100 Days in Office…

Nigerian Political Gist

Deceits of 100 Days in Office…

We seem to be drunk in and with the 100 days in office slogan. We appear beclouded in its toga. We are all wearing the robe of 100 days in office celebrating, clinging champagne glasses and swaggering on the dance floor as if suggesting that the race for development, good governance and utmost delivery of dividend of democracy rest only on the first 100 days in or of office of those in power.

We have been caught in web of the politics of 100 days in office. We are dazed by this syndrome ….so much so that we the masses may not have anything to hold against our leaders if they fail to perform eventually. I even hear that the 100 days in office drama has become a fast way of gulping funds just like security votes….It is now a means of and to release funds quickly to “meet up with the demands to commence new projects” but in the real sense, it is meant to settle political godfathers, stakeholders and political contractors.

I make bold to say that the race to good governance does not end in 100 days as our leaders are making it seem. Certainly, kudos must be given to some of them who genuinely tried within their first 100 days to show clear signs that they had hit the ground running and left the “weak, lazy and tactless ones behind….struggling to meet up with little or no ideas. But it must be said here that we have seen this kind of show in the past where those who started the race well end up showing or given us just the razzmatazz of the first 100 days in office…..all through four years….and even eight years are tales of woes and alibis of failure. The examples are abound.

I refuse to join the bandwagon of 100 days in office celebrants….and would rather warn that it is too early to judge the race by which athlete left the bloc first or strong. I would rather wait till the end of the first term or four years. I would task and charge our leaders to be God fearing and focused. They should simply pick key areas of needs of their people and fix them….rather than pretend that they can fix all as posited by the 100 days show of smartness.

No government or leader can fix all problems of the people or society. The pretence by our leaders have kept our country in this state of mess. Let’s just take a few steps backwards and assume that If only Olusegun Obasanjo fixed power….Umar Yar’Adua fixed agriculture….Goodluck Jonathan fixed unemployment and Muhammadu Buhari fixes the naira by stopping it’s free fall…..Perhaps we won’t be where we are as a people and a nation. But what do we have? Complains, buckpassing, excuses, condemnation and accusations of one another by our leaders.

Government is a continuum. The end of one administration should be the “continuation” of another…..and not the beginning…..Yes, I say continuation because when and once you assume it is the beginning, everything is turned upside down just as we are about to witness. I therefore charge our leaders to pick a project or two and complete it or them to the glory of God. Four years could appear or seem a long time but truth is, in government and governance it is just a very short time which limits the chance or chances of a government or leader doing all he or she plans, dreams, desires or wishes.

Stop joining the crowd or attempting to do like others. Stop emulation….be yourself and work with the resources available to you. The Internally Generated Revenue of Lagos for instance is enough to cater for five states allocations. So why would a wise governor attempt to embark on projects Lagos is carrying out all in the name of 100 days in office when his state IGR plus allocation is less than four billion naira yet his is not an oil producing state?

Let’s focus on a four-year plan and stop this mad rush of first 100 days in office.
