Nigeria like every other nation has passed through some difficult times. These periods present great challenges which shook the very foundation of the unity and existence of the country.
The challenges placed the leaders on the spot to make or take decisions that will make or mar the progress of the country. The state of mind of the leaders in such moments are better imagined than experienced.
Recall the several coup speeches and bloodbaths, the announcement of the annulment of June 12 Presidential election, the announcement of the death of Bashorun MKO Abiola. The stepping aside of Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, the declaration of the civil war of 1967, the back and forth movemdnt from military to democratic system of government and the DEFINING MOMENT of 2015 among others.
It was one of these DEFINING MOMENTS that Jonathan captured in his fast selling book MY TRANSITION HOURS
●President Goodluck Jonathan calls Muhammudu Buhari shortly before the final result of the 2015 Presidential election was announced…..The telephone rang…Buhari picks….
BUHARI : Hello Your Excellency
JONATHAN :Your Excellency, how are you?
BUHARI : I am alright, Your Excellency
JONATHAN : Congratulations
BUHARI : Thank you very much Your Excellency
JONATHAN : Your Excellency at your convinience, please send your list of names to work in the transition team, so that I can infuse them into mine. On a latter date we will meet to discuss more on the modalities and workings for a smooth transition.
BUHARI :Very well Your Excellency. I will reach out and get back to you.
JONATHAN : Ok Your Excellency. Best wishes
BUHARI : Thank you Your Excellency.
●This was the summary of the discussion that changed the face and perhaos tale of democracy in Nigeria. It was the brief chat that kept the ship of state sailing. It was the short talk that renewed hope of the unity of Nigeria. It was the conversation that revived hope of the stability of the nation.
One can only hope that this brief conversation resonates in the minds of the political class especially the gladiators and candidates seeking to lead the country as we approach the 2019 Presidential election.
This conversation is a trailblazer and pacesetter in our democratic journey. We pray it also becomes a foundation to build on for the future and elections to come. We hope that the 2019 election will replicate that defining moments of 2015 and repeat this dialogue for the nation to move forward.
May be, may be not we will witness more defining moments in 2019. Woe unto he, she or those who will attempt to drag Nigeria back to her “political Egypt”.
