Ebola Has been Conquered; Let Us Go Back To Our Dirty ways.

Ebola Has been Conquered; Let Us Go Back To Our Dirty ways.

The phrase “Good Hygiene” has never been a permanent resident in the city of Lagos and other parts of the country Nigeria especially the densely populated areas. However when we use the word hygiene with the “Good” added we will have a temporary tenant among us.

The city of Lagos is unofficially divided into two parts based on the class and status of the people living there. Lagos is divided into the Mainland Zone where a mixture of the super-poor, poor, average, rich etc reside and the Island with a mixture of the Super-rich, average, pretenders and packaged poor.

The arrival of Ebola in 2014 will forever remain in our hearts as one of the most deadly and scary breaking news in Lagos. The Ebola virus was introduced into Nigeria on 20 July 2014 when an infected Liberian man arrived by aeroplane into Lagos, Africa’s most populous city. Nobody understood this stranger that has entered into our country. There were all sorts of stories flying from one place to another.

The quickest way of contracting the disease was through body contacts with handshake the fastest. An the immediate solution were hand sanitizing agent (sanitizer). According a friend who works in a supermarket, he said the products that had gathered dusts that one would think the dust was part of the product itself became very popular overnight. He further said “We usually buy one or two cartons but right now, it is a truck load of cartons we are ordering”

The banking halls had these sanitizing agents all of the places. It was the duty of the cashier to ensure that you apply the sanitizer before handing over your cash. Some banks had to employ someone to make you use the sanitizers. The Nigerian government fought hard and the Ebola virus was repatriated.

Four years after, we have returned back to our old ways of unhygienic lifestyle. The sanitizers are back to the shelf to gather more dust. The sanitizer regime is over. The banking halls are do not have any trace of a product of sanitizer, not even in their convenience.

Our dirty ways that we missed because of the ebola virus attack has now been resumed in full pledge. We eat and dine in filthy environment. We have one silly statement “Something must kill a man” and so a lot of people do as they like. When the Ebola virus was in government, nobody wanted to die despite the fact that “something must kill a man”. We continue to see hygiene as a waste of time. We destroy and pollute our environment with dirt and all sorts of rubbish. Some people urinate and defecate in public places. A lot of people after using the toilets hardly wash their hands etc.

The Ebola virus may have gone but there are other deadly micro-organisms more powerful than the Ebola. They come unannounced and kill quietly. They do not come as outbreaks, they strike without any known trace. A country like Nigeria with poor medical facilities, it is very difficult to discover these diseases. It is then left for you to prevent rather than cure (Far fetched).
