The English Premier League (EPL) is known to be the most popular league in the history of football. It is the birth home of the game of soccer. England was among the countries tipped to be among the favorites to lift the prestigious trophy in this edition of the world cup.
England was in a group that was easy to predict because of the countries in that group. The only opposition who stood in their way was Belgium. Tunisia and Panama were walkovers for England. England really did not meet stronger opponents in their journey to the semi-finals except for Columbia that ended in a draw. England was able to advance to the semi-finals via penalties.
It was at the hands of Croatia that England’s dream of lifting the trophy came to an end. Despite the defeat, there was still hope for a bronze medal in the 3rd & 4th place match.
This dream was further thwarted by Belgium who had beaten them in the group stage by a lone goal. It was not just Belgium but some of the best foreign EPL players who play in the top clubs. Belgium showed England that they were not of the same category when it came to football.
These players are regulars in their clubs in the EPL. The likes of Romelu Lukaku, Fellaini (Manchester United), Eden Hazard, Coutois (Chelsea) and Kelvin De Bruyne, Kompany (Manchester City) were the players who had destroyed England’s plans to deprive them of a medal in the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The match was EPL versus England national team.
The first goal came in the 4th minute and despite all efforts from England they could not change the score until Eden Hazard buried the game with his superb strike. Belgium knew why they were in the World Cup. They wanted to make a history and they got what they wanted. This was their best outing in the history of the world cup and the players have made history for themselves as the first Belgian team to win a bronze in the world cup.
Finishing 4th is England’s second best outing in their world cup history.
