Image of The Nigerian Army

Image of The Nigerian Army

Decades before the coming of Boko Haram, the Nigerian Army is the most reverred in Africa….just as it is respected globally. Men of the Nigerian Army have received honours, laurels and awards for distinguishing themselves in various continental or global assignments especially in peacekeeping or enforcement.

The emergence of Boko Haram exposed a lot about our army. How Army Barracks and military installations were rampantly, constantly and ceaselessly invaded by insurgents thus leaving tales of woes remain a mystery….even as the international community keeps wondering if this was not the same army that it relied on for peacekeeping around trouble spots in the world.

Painfully, this development keeps reminding us of where our army was….and where it is at the moment. We bite our fingers in regret casting our minds back at how coups and counter coups affected our army professionally and how years of prolonged military rule destroyed the army thus, caging it’s strength, clipping it’s wings, breaking it’s claws and making it a mere political tool in the hands of selfish politicians….particularly retired army generals and former leaders who turned to politics after serving in the army.

Years ago, it was a taboo to hear that an army barrack was invaded and scores of soldiers killed. Pity, the person or persons who will ever conceive such idea. Years ago, it was a taboo to hear that a GOC was involved in a financial scandal….moving money out of his command to another command just because he was to be transferred, redeployed or posted to a new location. He must be a goner!

Years ago, our soldiers cannot be involved in a scandalous case now tagged MISTAKEN IDENTITY which left three policemen dead and a kidnap kingpin who was handcuffed released with his cuffs unlocked. It is really inexplicable even as the police described it as BIZARRE AND UNFORTUNATE!!! Dismissal awaits such soldiers for unprofessional conduct.

The army is now trading words with the police….and the world is watching our endless dramas. Each day comes with its episode….as we thrill the world. My pain is that our army which is one institution the world highly respects is now messed up by some very disturbing deeds from few officers or personnel that need to be investigated. For instance, we need to know who or which officer ordered the chase that led to the latest mess between the police and the army. Indeed, this new image courted by our army is disturbing to say the least.

Rather than come up with a professional strategy to send Boko Haram packing from our land and territory, we are just satisfied with curbing or checking their excesses….yet they comfortably occupy Sambisa Forest and attempt to spread and spray terror across the country. Ironically, those who are supposed to push the insurgents out are busy killing policemen and releasing kidnap kingpin in a case of “mistaken identity”.

As a concerned citizen, I am genuinely worried about the image of our army even as I know we have the wherewithal to do better in all areas of the Force. May be the Chief of Army Staff has to critically examine the image of the Force with a view to fixing it. Our soldiers must be professional and honourable in the discharge of their duties! We need to do better….
