One of the LAWMA (Lagos Stata Waste Management Agency) refuse disposal trucks assigned to pick refuse around Ago Palace way in Okota, Isolo Local Government Area,Lagos State caught fire in the early hours of Monday morning. The truck painted green and white had left Adebayo crescent after evacuating the refuse before entering the warehouses which shared boundaries with the street.
Not too long as it entered the premises, the refuse compartment of the big truck was on fire. In no time, the whole environment was enveloped in thick smoke. Efforts were made to put out the fire by the workers inside the warehouse premises but to no avail.
Residents of the quiet Adebayo Crescent had to close their windows and doors to avoid being chocked inside because of the smoke and fumes from the burning refuse. The residents, passersby on the Ago Palace way and environs had to run away to avoid inhaling the foul and polluted air while some cars had to park nearby to avoid accidents as the whole road was covered with thick smoke.
The fire kept on burning as it was fueled by different stuffs such as canisters, bottles, plastics that were exploding within the tight compartment. Despite the heavy rains, the fire kept on increasing. The workers kept on applying buckets of water to put out the fire as from all indications there were no fire extinguishers or if there was any it was already expired.
At a point the driver of the truck, entered the vehicle with an attempt to empty all the contents in the refuse compartment so as to avoid the truck getting burnt and reduce the effect of the spreading fire. The fire was brought under control with the help of the rain as every refuse were emptied on the ground within the premises of the warehouse.
As at the time of this report, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
