MEMOIRS OF KRAKPO (Certified Kolo)

KRAKPOR TAKEN TO PRIVATE SCHOOL

MEMOIRS OF KRAKPO (Certified Kolo)

Last time I promised to tell una how my Papa take put me for private school. Back then Government schools na the koko and for Benin private schools no pass three and the owners model am after government public schools.

As I dey finish Primary six na so dem say we go do common entrance. The pattern be say, every primary school dey go a secondary nearby as dem center. My school na Owina Primary School, and our uniform na all yellow with white stockings on brown shoes. Most times, everybody wey enter primary six dey look up to that center wey dem go post you go and no be the exam.

So we dey wait that day for school, naim headmistress call assembly for only primary six. She come tell us the name of our center. Na vex we take comot that assembly. As we hear that school name, we know say na bad luck be that. For Bendel state then, if any secondary expel you, na only that school fit accept you but if dem expel you from that school, na to go outside the state.

We no get choice so we all go write the exam for that school and the place far go inside inside. As we finish the exam, dem say na interview straight. We begin to suspect foul play. Result suppose come out first before interview. We sha do interview.

After two weeks, dem say result don come. As we check board, I shout “Osalala”. Out of 120 of us wey write the exam na only 5 people get the choice dem choose. The rest of us na the school we do exam dem give us. Funny thing be say, none of us choose that school.

As my Papa hear the matter, na so e come vex. E say him friend tell am say one new private school just open for G.R.A. E say dem dey find new students and na there I go attend. I look my Papa bad eye. Me wey my English no don for my mouth. Na which kind disgrace be this? That night I no fit sleep. The next morning, I go tell my Papa say make e no worry himself and the money too big. I tell am say I go attend that bad school say the school may no be as bad as we think am.

Two weeks later, my Papa say make we go somewhere. I jump enter motor and the next thing I land for the school. I read the name “Greater Tomorrow”. I look around; Na queens English the boys and the girls dey blow. My Papa lead me enter Principal office. Dem yarn small and the next thing dem give me uniform.

Two days later, I wear my white shirt and blue knicker enter motor na school I see so. All through the trip na vex I dey. Throughout that day for class, I just dey nod head like agama lizard. I no fit talk because no better English for mouth. I come dey unnecessarily quiet. That whole week, I become deaf and dumb. When my Papa for jeje leave me for that area school e dey go put me for school of mental torture.

I go tell una how I take survive that month because God come shine for my side.
