Mikel : New Phase, New Challenges

Mikel : New Phase, New Challenges

Life indeed comes or rolls in phases. Little wonder the holy book in Ecclesiastes 3 vs 1-8 states clearly the stages and opposites of every situation and point in a man’s life.

That Super Eagles skipper, John Obi Mikel has joined a new club in England is no longer news. That he has started a new phase in his career with a new club, Middlesbrough is also no news but what will be news to his fans is how he handles this new challenge and of course the success that it attracts.
Many who found themselves in Mikel’s shoes or position blew the opportunity to return to the elite league (EPL). Not many however succeed in their dreams of returning to the top class after leaving England for lowly Chinese league. When Mikel left for the Chinese megabucks many thought or felt, it was over as the former Chelsea star was facing retirement doors. He was once asked after the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup if he was done with the Super Eagles.

Mikel answered thus, “I am not tired so the issue of quitting from Super Eagles is uncalled for”.

If he could feature for Nigeria at the World Cup while playing in China then, he could as well feature for the national team if Nigeria qualifies for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. There is no doubting any longer if Mikel would be part of Eagles 2019 AFCON tourney. Once he starts playing weekly with ‘Boro in the Championship, surely, he will be a better and fitter player to control the midfield of his country in AFCON. Who knows, Mikel could captain Super Eagles to a resounding victory in South Africa. That will be his second AFCON win and a historic record since no Nigerian player has won the AFCON twice as a player.

Looking at the new challenge for Mikel at ‘Boro, he sure knows English football. He has the experience which was the foremost reason ‘Boro went for him. Mikel however understands that the EPL is a different ball game compared to the Championship which many believe is pretty tougher.
In this vein, Mikel has to be cautious to avoid career threatening tackles, challenges and injuries to help him look into the future with the tantalising AFCON 2019 and Qatar 2022 hopes.

The new phase of life for Mikel starts not just with playing regularly for ‘Boro. It actually starts with pushing the club to gain promotion to the elite league. Once the club returns to the top flight then, Mikel will be on a roller coaster to enjoy the few years he will be with them as he looks at the retirement doors with Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup as a signing out assignment. By this time, ‘Boro would have solidify their stay in the EPL hopefully.

From Pepsi Academy to Plateau United down to Lyn Oslo in Norway…straight to Chelsea in England and Tianjin TEDA of China, Mikel has started a new phase of life in ‘Boro. Winning trophies with his new club is part of his wishes but most importantly at the moment is helping the club to return to the EPL where he helped Chelsea win all trophies including the Champions League and Europa League.

It is not impossible for Mikel and ‘Boro to return to the EPL, it is also not impossible for both to dream big and achieve big. But how to achieve these depends on how player and club relate. Mikel has a history of being acceptable wherever he goes or plays until Antonio Conte’s arrival at Stamford Bridge. Mikel is an easy going person and player. This surely will make his stay in ‘Boro memorable as his fans pray and hope for the best from the Catalyst.
Best wishes in and with Boro, Mikel
