The National Principal Cup has commenced amid fanfare and glamour.

The Sports Minister Him. Sunday Dare alongside other dignitaries declared the competition open.

Nigerians among other things expect this competition to replicate the success of the past by producing world stars

We all know and agree that the likes of Adokiye Amiesimaka, Franklin Howard, Late Stephen Keshi, Tajudeen Disu, Waidi Akanni, Segun Odegbami, Daniel Amokachi, Henry Nwosu, Tajudeen Disu and Ali Jeje among others were all products of the Principal Cup.

These players were part of the glorious era of Nigerian football which stakeholders all believe could be revived.

It's revival will depend largely on how the national team coach or manager, Gernot Rohr views this project.

It is a national project meant to catch them young and fill the gap in the progression of players of our various youth teams who graduate to other senior teams.

Rohr cannot be excluded or exempted from.such lofty project especially after he has literally turned his back at the domestic league on ground that it lacks quality players.

Players from the Principal Cup in the past have walked straight into national team picking first shirts. It happened to Amiesimaka and Nwosu before they featured in triumphant 1980 AFCON squad.

In the light of this, this writer thinks it's necessary for the sports authorities especially the Minister and leadership of the NFF to compel Rohr to watch the Principal Cup...with a view of identifying talents who could be useful to the other tiers of the national teams if not the Super Eagles.

No law says, Principal Cup products or players cannot or should not get invitation to the Super Eagles if, they are good enough.

We all know that Schools Sports was the strength of Nigerian sports in the late 70s and early 80s. That was when catch-them-young program was introduced and the result was magnificent.

Nothing stops Nigeria under Sunday Dare's leadership as Sports Minister from revisiting that era to help rebuild our sports. We can start with this competition.

Please the first step should be to compel Rohr to watch or monitor the Principal Cup. May be if he sees the competition, he will change his mind about the average Nigerian footballer back home. That is the message of this writer!!!
