The Champions League is one of the prestigious football competitions in the world. In the its history, there are only four teams that has won the final as a first timer. The last time any club appeared at the final once and won as a first timer was in 1991 by Serbian Club Red Star Belgrade. The first club to break the jinx since inception of the competition was Feyenoord in 1970 and then Aston Villa in 1982 after which it was PSV Eindhoven 6 years later.
In this year’s final, Pep Guadiola’s Manchester city were favorites to lift the trophy and break the jinx after 30 years since the last winners. This year’s team were well balanced but a wrong selection and poor decision from the highly rated coach saw the club missing out of their first Champions League. Pep Guadiola would have joined the likes of coaches who have won the cup with clubs from different countries. Jose Mourinho won the competition with FC Porto of Portugal and Inter Milan of Italy.
Manchester City has joined the more than 20 clubs that have graced the finals but never won. Also, Manchester city would have gone down in history as one of the clubs that won the Champions league as well as their domestic titles. They would have joined Manchester United who in 1999 won the English Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in England.
