Community School Where Students Learn Under Hazardous Health Conditions

Learning Under Hazardous Health Conditions

Last week I found myself around Agric bus stop on the Agbara road after a passing through the terrible Badary-Seme road. I was heading towards Mile two but had to stop to see a friend and as well take some time to relax my already weakened body. It was when my friend was taking me to his house inside the area known as Agric that I came across a school sharing boundary with a refuse dump.

The first thought that came to my mind was “How can someone learn with so much bad odour around them?”. I quickly asked my friend the name of the school and he said “Government Junior Community School” also known as Agric Community School”. There was a terrible odour from the refuse dump and yet teachers and students sit comfortably to learn.

Nobody can learn under such conditions unless there are some traces of insanity in them. I felt nauseated as we walked on the road separating the other part of the school immediately the terrible odour attacked my nose in full force. It was awful. I am sure there are so many students who would have become regular visitors to hospitals because their body system could not accommodate such a terrible environment. Even the parents of these students do not see this hazardous environment posing dangers to the future of their wards.

I asked my friend if the government has done something about it and he replied sarcastically “Which government?” I began to wonder if Lagos state still has School Inspectors or the school monitoring units are still working. The government needs to stop residents from dumping refuse beside the windows of that school because of the health hazards. It is bad for the students. The school windows can keep away the sight of the refuse when locked but not the odour. There is no way, any child can learn with so much filth and still understand anything they are taught.

Lagos state government should please come to the rescue of the teachers and student of that school because their future is at stake.

Please share until it reaches the highest officer of the state.
