Early Morning Fire Destroys Building

Residents of Balogun Street, Off Ago Palace way, Okota had their sleep cut short when alarms were raised by the occupants of a building on fire in the early hours of Sunday morning. As early as 3:30am, a fully detached duplex with two units of 2 bedroom flats attached was seen in flames.

According to eye witnesses at the scene, the fire had started on the top floor from one of the flats at the back of the building. The cause of the fire was not known but there were insinuations that one of the occupants of the back flat who was a tenant was cooking with electrical stove but slept off, only to wake up to a raging fire. The woman was said to have ran out without shouting for help. It was the Landlord’s two sons who had raised the alarm when the fire spread into their own apartment.

The Lagos State fire service who were contacted only arrived the scene an hour later with an old fire truck that malfunctioned after 30 minutes of operation. The front outer walls of the building after suffering serious heat pressure caved in. The debris falling on a parked SUV that could not be moved because the keys were in the burning building.

About 30 minutes later, another fire truck with sophisticated facilities belonging to the state government arrived the scene. In no time the fire was put off but the whole top floor was burnt and nothing could be salvaged from the house. The tenant whose flat the fire had started from was nowhere to be found as she was said to have fled with her family out of fear.

No life was lost in the accident. The cause of the fire may have been due to electrical faults.
