Edo Elections: Will Oshiomole & The APC Back Down?

Edo State Political Gist

Posted  22 Views updated 7 days ago

The recent victory at the Abuja high court of Edo State embattled governor Godwin Obaseki over his former party the All Peoples Congress (APC) is a sign that former party Chieftain Comrade Adam Oshiomole’s political career is heading for the rocks. Oshiomole who through his influence denied Obaseki the APC ticket that would re-elect him had caused the governor to switch parties. Oshiomole had favoured Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu (POI), Governor Obaseki’s opponent in 2016 to represent the party.

Despite all Oshiomole’s strategies, tactics, persuading and begging POI still lost to Obaseki. The lost revealed that Oshiomole has not only lost the election but that his grip on the state was weakened. There were clear indications that he had no party backings as the presidency had turned a blind eye to all his efforts. In a bid to pull one more stunt, the APC had taken the governor to court over forgery of certificates, an allegation which was used to rob him of his return ticket in the party.

The University of Ibadan had come out to defend their product through the confirmation that Godwin Obaseki graduated from the institution and that the certificate issued to him was genuine. The high court however dismissed the case and granted victory to Obaseki. The rule of law had prevailed but the APC team is seeking to appeal the judgment. Adams Oshiomole has lost out again. Will he back down?

It is so glaring that Com. Adams is gradually losing his grip in Edo politics as the only arm of the APC backing him is the state body and not the national body.  Even the deputy governor Phillip Shuabu said to be from the same region as Oshiomole and claimed to be related to the former governor of Edo State is fighting against him. Oshiomole’s political structure in Edo state as a whole is on the brink of final collapse and tending towards irrelevance. With the PDP back in power, it will be very difficult for Oshiomole to pull any more stunts in the state to bring the power back to the APC if Obaseki still remains in government under the umbrella of the PDP.

It is time for Oshiomole to sheath his sword and allow the political parties to join hands push the state forward. There is no point going on a personal vendetta against the incumbent governor and the PDP. Although Adams is not new to legal battles because from his days as a labour leader to his time as the national chairman of the APC, he has seen more than enough court rulings. Perhaps this is right time to back out from this one as not all battles are won so as to protect what is left of his dwindling political career in Edo state.
