The battle to control power in a state between a sitting governor and senator especially if they are from different political parties and or from same Senatorial district has a long history since 1999.

Most times if it is not the senators squaring up with the governors, it is the honourable Minister's represting such state in the cabinet of the President.

The muscle flexing has led to some governors losing grip of power and eventually losing out in their second term bid. In other times, the governors have successfully outwitted the senators or ministers...thus reducing them to mere or common citizens.

The case of Rivers State is handy. Gov. Nyesom Wike has successfully dislodged the Honourable Minister for Transport, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi who was the former's godfather before they fell apart in the struggle for power to control the state.

Today, Nigerians are watching another classic movie with location in Imo and rich cast which has Gov. Hope Uzodinma and Senator Rochas Okorocha.

Incidentally, both are from Imo West Senatorial district. They are equally from same political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). Infact, Okorocha succeeded Uzodinma...just as the later took over from the former at Douglas House. Call it a clean swap or exchange and you won't be wrong.

So why the war? Nothing else but muscle flexing to control power. Uzodinma had used the House of Assembly and Panel of Inquiry into recovery of state properties to reclaim the Eastern Palm University which originally belongs to Okorocha.

As the former governor was trying to fight to stop that move, the next blow came from Uzodinma who sealed the Royal Palm Estate belonging to Okorocha.

Okorocha moved in on Sunday February 21, 2021 to break the keys used to lock the Estate. This attracted the attention of the Commissioner of Police who moved in his men to institute an arrest. Okorocha was driven away in a police Hilux van....

A's the drama continues, Imolites live in apparent confusion and apprehension. The state has not known peace since Uzodinma's government was brought into power by the famous Supreme Court judgement of January 14, 2020 which swept away the administration of Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha.

It has been from one trouble to another. The state is still battling over the Senate seat for Imo North. The case is in court as Frank Ibezim is at daggersdrawn with Ifeanyi Araraume.

Back to Governors versus Senators. We witnessed the showdown between Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello and Senator Dino Melaye. It was an award winning movie which many believe GYB as the governor is addressed by his admirers won.

Kaduna State had it's fair share of this battle between Gov. Nasri El-Rufai and Senator Shehu Sani. In Akwa Ibom, it was Gov. Emmanuel Udom taking on his predecessor cum godfather Senator Godswill Akpabio who later lost his seat in the Senate but was compensated by a ministerial appointment.

The end of these battles is not in sight as more and more will spring up as long as we keep practicing our peculiar kind of democracy where the winner grabs it all.
