It was the need for a better security force to combat the rising threats from Kidnappers and bandits in the South West that led to Amotekun. In the Northern part of Nigeria, there is the Hisbah Police who carry out some security duties like the Nigerian Police Force. In order for any security outfit to combat high risk threats such as sophisticated weapon brandishing bandits and kidnappers, they need to be well equipped with good weapons and protective gears like the bullet proof vests.
Will Amotekun depend on the use of modern day bullet proof vests or they will go the way of the traditional path where charms, amulets, oitments etc are preferred. In the fight against terriorist group Boko Haram, the civil outfit known as Joint Task Force are mostly hunters who prefer to wear their amulets and protect themselves instead of the foreign bullet proof vests worn by the Nigerian army. Which more effective in the battle field?
There are some Nigerian soldiers who still wear some charms underneath their uniforms and have incisions done on their bodies for protection.
