Shouldn't We Listen To Ganduje?

"We are building a Ruga settlement in Dansoshiya Forest at our border with Katsina and we have succeeded in curtailing the effect of banditry in that area.

“So, we are building many houses, we are constructing a dam; we are establishing a Cattle Artificial insemination Centre; we are establishing veterinary clinic and already we have started building houses for herdsmen.

“My advocacy is that we should abolish the transportation or trekking of herdsmen from the northern part of Nigeria to the Middle Belt and to the Southern part of Nigeria.

“There should be a law that will ban, otherwise we cannot control the conflicts between herdsmen and farmers and cannot control the cattle rustling which is affecting us greatly."

The above is a statement from Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano. Many say this will bring about a lasting solution to the banditry and kidnappings which the herdsmen have been accused for.

But will the Federal Government heed to this advice? Will the governors push for this action as a solution for the mayhem meted out to Communities which has led to the outrage in Ondo and Oyo States respectively?

Critics ask why it took Ganduje this long to speak up despite the high rate of mindless killings, kidnappings and banditry witnessed in the last 12 months.

They say this question is pertinent considering the fact that the bandits are hiding under the cover of herdsmen to carry out their callous acts.

In other words, supposing they have strategically spread and stationed themselves in cities and farmlands across the country, what happens to them if the movement of the cattle from North to South eventually stops?

Anyway, first thing first. If stopping the movement of cattle from north to south will put an end to insecurity then, so be it.

The issue of the menace of the bandits who have moved into the cities under the guise of moving cattle could be attended to by State governors and state security achitecture.
