Coach Boom (played by Denzel Washington) said “We can win games if we work as a team irrespective of our skin color, race and status” (The Movie: Remember the Titans). You can work with anybody the moment both parties set aside the external baggage such as skin color, race, religion, tribe, educational status etc. The movie “Remember the Titans” was based on unity between black and white high school soccer players. It was all about keeping aside differences and working together as one formidable team.
There are cases where we find ourselves working in the same establishment with people we do not like. Everybody is gifted in one way or the other. Nobody is useless. We might have different educational background, experiences and exposures but one thing remains important – we all have a role to play. Working as a team is not all about finding yourself in a specific department or unit. It extends beyond your department. Everybody within your organization is a team member including the janitors, security men as well as the drivers.
You may be your own boss and feel that you do not need to work with anybody to achieve your goals. There will be a limit to how far you will go. Even your customers are part of your team. Teamwork is a divine secret of uncommon success. Talent wins games but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.
You can work with anybody by overlooking their weaknesses and shortcomings. Focus on their strengths and what they can offer. The common man out on the street might just be the solution to that problem you have been finding hard to solve. I have a friend who is a copywriter and works for an advertising firm. According to him “The ideas behind most of my best works are from the streets of Lagos among those others sees as good for nothing. I go to joints and sit with some of these guys and chip in the brief. You will be surprised when you hear the ideas from these guys. They are a part of my external and informal team”.
Learning is not only about formal education but also informal. You can learn every day informally from anybody when you put away your pride and humble yourself. There is some times when some problems do not need logical and educational based solutions but illogical ones and the only person that can give you the answer maybe someone who you underrated. According to Ubong King, between two peaks of success is a valley of failure and the only way to avoid that valley is to build a bridge of people –a TEAM. Never look down on anybody because that person might be the catalyst to your success.
