They United The Country Through Sports. Today Their Likes Are Scarce
Most of them were not sportsmen but they touched lives through sports. They impacted meaningfully.
They took lots of youths off the streets and crime to become great citizens and champions.
Some used their money others used their positions in government to better sports. They sponsored tournaments and competitions. They paid training grants to athletes. They rewarded sportsmen and women philanthropically. They floated sports clubs and ran them professionally.
They brought joy to millions of homes. They made many rich from hopeless background. They paid flight tickets to and fro to athletes who represented Nigeria to attend global meets.
They came up with sports programs, policies and plan that built sports from the schools and grassroots to global standards thus making grassroots discoveries world champions.
During their era, the local league produced World Cup stars. School sports products became Olympic medallists and grassroots upstarts were shot to stardom.
Then Sports Ministers were true lovers of sports. They were hungry to leave legacies of honour, trophies, medals and laurels.
These legacies brought unity, peace and prosperity to the country. Nigeria was truly one with sports and with these generous and administrative icons.
God bless the souls of these sports leaders. The spirit of Nigeria will forever be with you....because you are carriers of the Nigerian spirit.
