In the last few weeks, there has been so many waters that have passed under the bridge. Last week, the compulsory registration of National Identity Number (NIN) and linkage to our sim numbers deadline was further extended. Nigeria as a country loves to do things at the inappropriate time. The registration of the NIN should not have been forced on Nigerians because presently the world is battling a deadly disease that is claiming lives. In a bid to avoid meeting the deadline, there as been a massive rush and anything known as safe distancing was no longer considered. And for those who could not stand the crowd, they had to pay N7,000 to get the NIN. The NIN registration has become a money making venture for so many corrupt organizations. This is something that with a software that will not need you to go there physically and via a link you can achieve it.
Another event the country and reduced the status of giant to dwarf was when the World Health Organization told Nigeria that they do not have the storage facilities to accommodate the N400 billion vaccines they want to purchase. Is it not a big shame that Nigeria that has fewer deaths is the one going to spend such an amount on vaccines that may not even work with our own system. What stops the country from investing such a huge amount in equiping the vaccine making faciliy in Yaba, Lagos as well as setting up newer centers? Is it a crime to make our own vaccines and sell to the world? In order to ensure that we make this vaccine come to the country, some people are geared up to import the generators to power the new compartments for storage etc.
Nigeria is a country where the people have to look out for themselves and then the Central Bank of Nigeria has come out againg to ban cryptocurrency. Without a clear understanding of what it means or how it can even help the name, just like the good old days of dictatorship they banned it. Developed countries are cashing out but Nigeria is banning it rather than regulating. The country is going backwards. And it seems they are loving it.
This week might bring another shocking and embarrassing moment that will take us back further into the abyss of stagnation
