There is the saying that “Football is the most popular sports that unites the world more than any other event or activity”. During tournaments such as the World Cup, Nations Cup and other football competitions, nations are pulled together under one roof to battle for the ultimate prize. Every nation irrespective of language, race and religion come together to cheer up their countries. The different country individual clubside competitions also attract citizens from other countries to their choice support clubs. The UEFA Champions’ league which is a continental competition is one of the many football tournaments that have a strong hold on the world. Football has remained the undisputed champion in uniting the world better than any other event.
But when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world leading to a lockdown, even football could not connect the world. Nobody was interested any more. It was all about survival. The world needed a “New Hope”. The virus has claimed lives, destroyed family happiness, and brought nations economies to their knees (And is still continuing). The world was at her final bus stop. The virus respected nobody irrespective of age, religion, class, status, wealth etc.
As the world waited, a song titled Jerusalema with some dance moves appeared and went viral on the social media. The song was released in 2019 but became popular during Covid-19 pandemic. Jerusalema was made by South African DJ Master KG. It was the game changer. When the Jerusalema Challenge started on TikTok, the views rose to more than 300 million views and still counting. From the lyrics it spoke about a new home. The song was adapted from an old hymn Jerusalem Ikhaya Lami (Jerusalem My Home). The song has brought the world together in a way that everybody, organization, government officials are so involved in doing the dance steps as well as modifying it.
I was thrilled to see videos of medical doctors and nurses - the soldiers battling the Corona virus are doing the Jersualema dance to encourage themselves. Even non-Christian nations have joined in the Jerusalema Dance Challenge. The song has different meanings for different people but the most important one is that of unity and giving people a new hope.
So who would you pick as the New World Champion of Unity during the Covid-19 pandemic –Football or Jerusalema dance challenge?
