Nigeria: Certificate Achievements with no Innovations Makes Us Irrelevant

Every day, a new creation comes out. Technology has taken over every sector in the world. Different countries are fast becoming technologically relevant through their innovations and creativity. They have come to understand that to remain relevant in the world; creativity, innovation and technology must be your number one priority.

The educational system is no longer centered on just theory but with rapid growth in practicability. If you are a professor in electronics, show us why you are one. It is not all about certificates or titles but what value it adds to us as a people. America respects China today because of their technological advancements. India has become a household name in Nigeria when it comes to software.

These countries were able to become who they are when they started combining theory with practical. They became relevant through their innovations. They did not sit down and face only theories but instead brought these theories to life.

In Nigeria, we are still chasing certificates that are only theoretical with no practicability value. We have professors all over the country but yet we are backwards in terms of innovations. It is only when we go outside the country that you will start hearing about how a Nigerian professor created one thing or the other. The only reason why the professor can do that is because he has found out that to remain relevant in the system, practicability is the number one quality.

I remembered some years ago, when I was telling a friend about a training that we should attend and the question he asked “Will they give us a certificate?”

We are so hooked to certificates just get into a position and at the end of the day we offer nothing of relevance. Chinese students cannot speak good English but yet they keep on inventing new gadgets. These geniuses are given the necessary guidance to help them to showcase their talents and creativity. In Nigeria, a student will exhibit creativity; he becomes a victim in that department because his/her lecturer cannot do anything.

We fail to convert Knowledge to skill. We accept paper achievements more than innovations. I have come across so many Nigerians with different certificates but yet they cannot defend the certificates of the studies they have undergone.

Nigerian graduates cannot bring their projects to life. A lot of innovations we see today are school projects of students. You go banks and see computer science undergraduates on Industrial training working as cashier. These same students will fill their log books with work not done and at the end of the day they are marked completed. The Industrial Training fund which is the government body responsible for the supervision does not carry out their duties. They neither visit these students to know if they are in the right industry nor carryout verification from companies where they worked.

We acquire and celebrate certificates not knowledge. Certificates are our biggest achievements. We are fast becoming irrelevant as a nation. The time is coming when oil will no longer sell but the technology or innovations that you have. At that time, certificates would have become just paper because what countries are looking for is what they can see in the physical and beneficial to them, not what your certificate says you can do.
