Nigeria Decides 2019: The Okota Unrest – The True story

Nigeria Decides 2019: The Okota Unrest – The True story

On the 23rd of February, 2019, Nigeria had her presidential, senatorial and house of representation elections which were previously slated for 19th February, 2019. In some parts of the country there were reports of violence and disturbances which resulted to disruption of the voting exercise. Ago Palace way, in Okota, Lagos State is the most trending of all the areas because of several short video clips that was sent via social media.

Ago Palace way is a long stretch of road from Okota roundabout to Ago Bridge. This road is a business hub where we have well known banks –First Bank, Polaris Bank, Fidelity Bank, Diamond bank and other businesses. Ago Palace way is accommodates more of the non Yoruba speaking tribes. It is more of a People Democratic Party (PDP) zone.

In Okota, Nwanchukwu Drive was another zone that experienced unrest where shots were fired to scare off INEC officials as well as voters. The whole polling unit was left in a mess after everything was destroyed. There was some unrest in polling units on Taiwo Street and Balogun Street, off Ago Palace way, Okota where broken bottles were used to scare off some voters. It was not as severe as the one on Baba Ewe Street and Diamond bank at last bus stop on Ago Palace Way, Okota.

An eye witness who was present at the scene gave gistpad.com a detailed first hand audio report of the whole scenario.

The name OPC mentioned in the audio stands for Oodua People’s Congress and the thug whose motorcycle was burnt is called Demola who is the leader of the Okota branch.

On the security at Baba Ewe and Diamond bank, it was very poor. At Adebayo crescent of Ago Palace way, Okota where you have less than 150 voters who were coming in trickles had 3 policemen attached to the polling unit. Why would one Police officer be assigned to a unit with more than 500 voters?

The police station on Ago Palace way is located directly opposite century hotel which is owned by the founder of OPC, Late Dr Fasheun and automatically serve as the headquarters for the group.
