Nigeria Needs More Sales People -Part Two

In the part one of this series, I laid the foundation for this topic. If you missed it, I encourage you to go through it. Permit me to now go deeper in highlight the different roles of the different segments of the Nigerian society in selling Nigeria to Nigerians and foreigners.

4) THE JUDICIARY: All over the world, there is no perfect society or country. There are always some set of people who would deviate from acceptable codes of conduct. However, in most country the judiciary usually lives up to their selling responsibilities by ensuring that whoever breaks the law (irrespective of their status in the society) are appropriately punished.
The judiciary in Nigeria needs to borrow a leaf from other climes where there is no regard for anybody’s social status when it comes to punishing such a person(s) for breaking the laws of the land. There shouldn’t be anything like bribe for favourable rulings or judgments. The truth is that the process of selling Nigeria to Nigerians and foreigners will be futile if people are not punished for breaking the law. Such a situation will be a recipe for chaos as more people will lose faith in the judiciary and resort to taking the law into their hands. The judiciary in Nigeria has the selling responsibility of ensuring that Nigeria do not denigrate to such a level.

5) THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY: The entertainment industry in Nigeria (I mean Nollywood and the music industry) have a huge role in the process of selling Nigeria internally as well as externally. When you watch most American movies, you would see the cast of such movies demonstrate their undying love for America. Some even go to the extent of sacrificing their lives in defense of their country. In the same vein, the American music industry has also play a very important role in influencing the lifestyle of Americans and numerous nationals of other countries.
One of the problems bedeviling Nigeria at the moment is the problem of hate speeches. The problem of hate speeches is like a time bomb waiting to explode. The entertainment industry can actually play a critical selling role in this regard by producing movies and songs that would condemn and strongly discourage hate speeches. A lot of the Nigerian movie stars and music artistes are super star celebrities and they have a lot of influence over their fans. And if they accept the selling roles of discouraging hate speeches, the Nigerian polity will experience peace and those in government at different levels will thereafter be able to channel their energy and resources towards other selling responsibilities.

6) THE EDUCATIONAL SECTOR: For a very long time, the framework of the Nigerian educational sector has been very academic in nature. Pupils and students are essentially taught to study very hard so that they can make good grades in order to get good jobs upon their graduation. The way the educational sector is set up has contributed hugely to the unemployment problem that is prevalent in Nigeria today because Nigerian graduates are trained to be job seekers rather than sales men and women (solution creators). In other words, they are not taught how to scan their environment in order to identify problems that they can solve for other people and get paid for. This is what selling is all about. Some other people may call it entrepreneurship development.
The educational sector in Nigeria needs to be reviewed and restructured. The academic curriculum at all levels needs to be revisited. The focus has to be on selling (problem solving) such that irrespective of the course Nigerians study in school, they would be more disposed to using such knowledge to identify problems that they can solve. All the participants in the educational sector (I mean the Ministries of education, teachers at all levels, parents and of course the students themselves) must fold their sleeves and work very hard to change the unemployment narrative in Nigeria. All hands must therefore be on deck to enhance the selling (problem solving) disposition of every Nigerian student. This would lead to a situation where more Nigerian graduates of different disciplines would focus more on setting up their own businesses rather than wasting their time looking for white collar jobs that are not available.

To be continued…
Until I come your way again with the part three of this series, always remember that “your selling efforts will produce more sales revenue when they are focused on solving customers’ problems and improving their situations”.
