NIGERIA NEEDS MORE SALESPEOPLE – PART ONE

NIGERIA NEEDS MORE SALESPEOPLE – PART ONE

NIGERIA NEEDS MORE SALESPEOPLE PART ONE

I am highly motivated to write this article. As sales people (we are all in the business of selling), our core responsibility is to proffer solutions and make situations better than we met them. Unlike the restrictive meaning of selling in the public domain, which restrict selling to mean convincing people to buy what you have; selling in the real sense is all about helping people to attain the results or outcomes they seek or want. So, whenever you help people to achieve the outcomes they seek, you are in the business of selling and you are a sales person.
The problems in Nigeria today are multifaceted and multidimensional. From insecurity to economic recession. From ethnic agitations to religious intolerance, the list can go on and on. But the summary of the situation is that different segments of the country want different things and they want solutions urgently. This is why I said Nigeria needs more sales people. We need more solution providers not people who will continue to discuss the problems.
Allow me now to highlight the selling roles of the different segments of Nigeria.

1) THE PRESIDENT: The President of the Federal Republic Of Nigeria is indeed the Chief Sales Officer (CSO) of Nigeria. His selling responsibilities are indeed numerous and the good thing is that he is not working alone. His Ministers and other numerous political appointees are all there to assist him to get the job of selling to Nigerians and foreigners done.
From my experience in the profession of selling, I know that the success or failure of any sales team depends on the leader of the team. So, going forward the President has to let his team members know that their core responsibility is that of selling (producing solutions in their respective job designations). He should further let them know that it is either they produce solutions or they are fired. That is exactly how it is done in the selling world. If you fail to meet your sales target(s), you are shown the exit door. Governance should not be different. Such a move will be a wake-up call to non-performing political appointees.

One of the reasons the United States of America is the greatest nation on earth is that they are a nation of sales people. They have been able to sell America to Americans as well as the entire world (everybody wants to visit the United States of America). These are the kind of responsibilities before our President. He has to be able to create the atmosphere where Nigerians irrespective of religious or ethnic background want to live together in peace and unity. He further has to create a situation whereby Nigerians prefer Nigerian Universities to Universities in Ghana and other foreign countries. He has to create the enabling environment for both local and foreign investors to prefer investing in Nigeria to any other country in Africa.

2) STATE GOVERNORS: Just as the President is the Chief Sales Officer (CSO) at the Federal level, the State Governors are the Chief Sales Officers ( CSOS) of their respective states. Whether they know it or not, they are actually trying to outsell one another and the truth is that some State Governors are actually outselling their contemporaries in this regard. This is evident in the fact that most young Nigerian graduates prefer going to Lagos State to any other State in Nigeria to job hunt. This is also the case with a lot of local and foreign investors.
Mark Zuckerberg (the world’s 5th richest man) came to Nigeria for the first time in 2016 and Lagos was the only state he visited. His visit to Lagos clearly reaffirmed Lagos as the undoubted focal point in Nigeria. This feat is the result of the selling efforts of successive Governors of that state (please note this has no political colouration). It was only on Mark’s second visit to Nigeria that he went to Abuja to see the President.

It is also very important to mention a state like Cross River which has become the tourist destination in Nigeria. Its Calabar Christmas carnival (which is a month long event) has completely changed the nomenclature of that state as a lot of tourists eagerly look forward to visiting the State during the event. I sincerely hope more state Governors in Nigeria will wake up and effectively drive the selling processes in their respective states.

3) LEGISLATORS: Legislators at Federal, State and Local Government levels have very important roles in the processes of selling Nigeria (providing solutions to our numerous problems). They are required to make laws for peace and order in Nigeria. The prevalence of law and order is key in attracting both local and foreign investors. Nobody wants to invest his or her hard earned money in a place where there is no peace and order. But when there is peace and order more businesses will be attracted, more youths will be gainfully employed and the restiveness in different parts of the country will be reduced to a minimum level.
In the part two of this write up, I will talk more about the roles of other segments in the process of selling Nigeria to Nigerians and Foreigners because Nigeria indeed needs more sales people in all spheres.

To be continued…

Until I come your way again, always remember that “your selling efforts will produce more sales revenue when they are focused on solving customers’ problems and improving their situations”.
