Nigeria: On The Eve of The 2019 Elections

Nigeria: On The Eve of The 2019 Elections

The atmosphere on the mainland in Lagos state on the eve of the 2019 presidential election coming up on the 16th of February is what one could describe as tension soaked.

for the past few weeks, in Lagos state and some parts of the eastern state, the normal activities of campaigning and awareness seems to be on the low. This time around the usual sharing of goodies seemed to have ceased. So many people cared less of the coming election.

The tide changed earlier today when banks like First Bank closed its branches by 1pm and by 4pm later in the day, there were long queues at the ATM machines in most part of the city.

I spoke to a friend in Kano and he said lots of shops were shutting down earlier than expected and so many people running home for fear of violence. According to him, so many people were buying foodstuffs and stocking their homes for fear of what might happen if things go wrong.

The presidential election is a battle of the two big parties -The All Progressive Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP). The other parties do not stand a chance in the elections as most of the big wigs are either in the APC or PDP.

In Okota, a part of the Isolo Local Government Area which is mostly dominated by non-yoruba speaking tribes especially those from the south-east and south-south zones, the tension is easily noticed as most of the shops had shut down before 8pm. All most all the supermarkets were filled with customers trying to buy one thing or the other for fear of violence. It can best be described as a fear of war.

The queues at the petrol filling stations is so long that one would think that there is a scarcity. Everyone is waiting for tomorrow to come and then the aftermath. The tension before the election is higher than the election event itself.

Will Nigeria go to war, if one candidate does not win or if the election is inconclusive?

The answer will only be revealed after the election tomorrow.
