Nigerian Democracy: 20 years after, Senators still use “I” and “Nay”

Watching the just concluded ministerial nominee screen on Nigeria Television Authority, Nigeria’s biggest television station in terms of numbers without quality was like torture. It is really absurd to imagine that the use of technology is still alien to the Nigerian Senate chambers where the nominees were screened.

We are in the era of technological advancement and yet we are still backwards in how we handle our affairs. Simple voting is still done the old school ways. This is the century where statistics and data is what governments use to forecast, plan and strategize.

A nominee is screened and to support the motion of whether he or she should take a bow and go, what you hear is: “Those in favor should say “I” and “Nay” that are not in favor should say “Nay”. A few senators will answer “I” and the next thing you will hear is “The Is has it”.

The question -Is how many people actually said “I”, “Nay” or were neutral in their response? Data is important to actually know what the feelings of those in the house were. Voting on matters relating to the country is important.

The use of technology will help to know those who are actually serious about their duties as senators. The data will show those who are actually listening and following proceedings in the house. During the ministerial screening, a lot of the senators were busy discussing while important matters were being raised and addressed. Some were even sleeping while others were walking around.

With technology and data mining, states can actually know which of their senators are representing them well, making contributions and doing the needful. It is via data that will be published so the people of the state will know that it is their choice to return a performing or non-performing senator to represent them. It will make these senators sit up and be focused because there is an assessment tool for them.

A lot of countries have gone past such voting methods. There are so many technologies that can handle this voting system in Nigeria. There is no big deal in it. We should stop disgracing our country and going on air if in this technological revolution we are still doing “I” and “Nay”

This is the time to change and move to next level.
