Last night I was with friends at a joint when a group of young boys and girls in their early 20s walked in hand-in-hand like lovebirds to have fun. The time was 8pm. The oldest would not be more than 22. They were about 16 in number. From their conversation and behavior I could deduce that they just finished secondary school.
These teenagers sat in this open space drinking joint laying bottles of alcoholic beverages to rest without fear of anybody sighting them. The guys wore sagging and rugged-torn jeans pants. The hairdos of these boys were like those of the different music artistes on television and pages of magazines.
Today, the mentors of the Nigerian youths are musical artistes who portray drugs, money and all forms of immoral acts in their videos. Education has fallen to the lowest level. Once they manage to graduate from secondary school, the next on the agenda is to make quick money by any crafty means available. They want to live that life of luxury as portrayed by those they idolize. For the young girls, to dress provocatively is the thing on their mind. The want to be as sexy as ever .Thinking of the future is no longer in vogue. The future is now.
Parents have failed in their duties seriously. A lot of parents even encourage their daughters to dress in such ways to attract rich men. Parents no longer care about their kids anymore. They are busy chasing money. A child will wear clothes not bought by his or her parents and yet they will not ask him where he or she got the money to them. Children are acquiring expensive gadgets and living expensive lifestyles and the parents are not saying anything.
The Bible says “Train up a child in the way, he should go and he will not depart from it”. Nigerian parents have thrown away such statements. They don’t care about where their children are getting money as long as they enjoy part of the largess, they okay. There are so many parents who go to religious houses to pray for the success in their children’s “yahoo yahoo” business.
There so many teenage girls who have become single mothers due to recklessness and their parents are harboring the little kids brought into the world. A lot of parents have sent their children into bondage because they refused to train them well. So many youths have taken to serious cultism and carrying all act of wickedness on their fellow mates. They have become addicted to chronic betting all in a bid to make money. Parents do not have firm grip over their children any more.
The government has made education to be seen as a waste of time because of their persistent love for stealing and corruption. No child wants to become an inventor. They all want to be politicians and musicians because the belief is that is where you can have all the money in the world. They have made youths to believe that working hard and smart does not pay. Our youths are using their creativity for devilish and dubious means. Smartness has become craftiness. They have adopted the wrong route of life.
The earlier we start nipping this concern in the bud the better or else our youths will one day become Xenophobic when foreigners come in to start getting the juicy positions because we do not have the right people to fill up these positions.
When these unguided youths have wasted their lives they end up frustrated and all they become are touts waiting for an opportunity to strike like in the last reprisal attacks where Nigerian owned businesses were looted.
