Okwaraji: A Piece of History?

Okwaraji: A Piece of History?

The only factor that keeps the memory of Late Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji alive in the minds of football enthusiasts is the date or day he slumped and died, talking about August 12, 1989.

Today is August 12 and once again those who can will remember this Eagle who flew and soared higher in an attempt to make his country great and proud. Aside this memory, there is nothing else that could be pointed at in memory of a great son who toiled to serve his fatherland patriotically and in most distinguished manner.
The clamour for him to be honoured was politicized. Those running sports in general and football in particular felt it was of no use bothering or dissipating so much energy and time on honouring the dead and a mere footballer who could pass for just a common man. Hmmmm…..Perhaps, they forgot that all soul shall die

Ever since, Okwaraji’s soul has rested and it does not any longer to anyone whether he died serving his country or not. His family remains in pains and sadly so each time August 12 crawls or creeps in. It comes with a burst of anger in their blood.
Okwaraji has gradually become a piece of history in Nigeria football. But it doesn’t matter how much the truth is surpressed, he remains a hero of our football who sacrificed his life that his country be made great.
If June 12 could come alive for honour and Bashorun MKO Abiola awarded GCFR even if posthumously perhaps someday, August 12 will be remembered and honoured….and Okwaraji posthumously honoured.
May be the likes of Rashidi Yekini, Willy Agbonavbare, Uche Okafor and Stephen Keshi who were all members of the glorious 1994 class of Super Eagles but are no more would also be honoured someday.
Rest on Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji….
