Reign Of The Godfathers

Reign Of The Godfathers

The war between godfather and godson did not start with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode….and it certainly will not end with them. As a matter of fact, this war will attract more wars with a multiplying if not bandwagon effect and style as far as our politicians and the manner they operate democracy are concerned.

Our politicians have all adopted the style of absolute power and total control of their domains or territories just like our traditional rulers who are conferred with monarchical authority of absoluteness. Wherever you are….you hold onto control and silence all oppositions either by carrot or by force.

The story of Lagos politics especially as it concerns the 2019 governorship election will forever be told and it is a clear warning or indication of what is come. Some godfathers like Tinubu could succeed in using his strong Grassroot Movement to hold on to power but many are not as lucky as the Jagaban of Borgu Kingdom. Of all the Tinubu’s mates who were governors between May 29 1999 and May 29, 2007 just two of them are still hanging on and holding on to power and control of their states.

Tinubu and of course Abubakar Bukola Saraki. The rest struggled but got dislodged by the renewed forces of their godsons cum successors who eventually threw them out of power and out of reckoning. Even the opposition in Kwara State backed by forces outside the state are pushing the O TO GE (Enough is enough) agenda against Saraki to dislodge the dynasty he inherited from his Late father, Oloye Olusola Saraki. But the Senate President is battling from all fronts to survive the push.

From Orji Uzor Kalu to Peter Odili, Chimaroke Nnamani to Gbenga Daniel, Donald Duke to Adamu Muazu and Obong Victor Attah to Sam Egwu among others the story has been the same. It has been a story of the kettle calling the pot black. It has been a story of the rat chasing away the cat. It has been a story of the tenant pursuing the landlord so to say….and it has been a story of the kingmaker being chased afar by the king. The godsons of these former governors have frustrated them out of recognition. This is one factor that makes the duo of Tinubu and Saraki highly respected politically. They are tough and ruthless. They are real grassroots politicians. They know their terrain and onus. They have stood the test of time even in the face of threats to dislodge them.

The plot and trend by political godsons to dislodge their godfathers won’t change….in fact, it is s growing trend. It is transforming into a deadlier scale and level as most godsons who are witnesses to Ambode’s plight and ordeal suffered in the hands of Tinubu will vow never to experience such. They will rather fight dirty irrespective of what it will cost or the casualty it will leave behind or lead to. The future is indeed gloomy and bleak for our democracy and politicians given the level of resistance we may witness from the godsons who fall out of line and favour of their godfathers in years to come. Push is gradually coming to shove….just as the chicken may soon come to roast. The hunter may soon become the hunted.

We saw the dirty fight between Peter Obi and Willie Obiano. We are witnessing the cold war between Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Umar Ganduje. What of the battle to control Akwa Ibom between Godswill Akpabio and Emmanuel Udom? We cannot take our eyes away from the war between Chibuike Amaechi and Nyesom Wike. Those who know say, Adams Oshiomhole is not finding things funny with Godwin Obaseki.
Certainly in the coming dispensation, the fights between godfathers and godsons to control their states and interests could be more brutal than we are presently experiencing.

Today’s politicians wear radical robes and may not be patient enough to take orders from the old order as seen in the past. Things are fast changing and the Lagos drama could spring up more radicalism from the new generation politicians. Ambode belongs to this generation and his case is a clear sign of a major shift from the past. It is fast becoming a case study for would-be or “wannabe” governors. The new generation politicians may be few but they could push for this change….They could infiltrate the “guards of the old order” to break and buy them to their side….They could resist this politics of the “godfather said”….and they could be equally ready for the consequences. Needless saying the consequences would be ghastly if we go by the deep connection built over the years by the godfathers and their grassroots support bases.

The mere thinking that if President Muhammadu Buhari had no godfather yet became President could keep resonating in the minds of the new breed politicians then, we could be looking towards the end to political godfatherism. But will the new breed be ready to pay the expensive price?
