Spurs demolish sorry Everton

Tottenham Hotspur thumped Everton 6-2 at Goodison Park in the Premier League to move within two points of Manchester City and six points of pace-setters Liverpool at the top of the table.

Everton took the lead through Theo Walcott on 21 minutes, but Tottenham strolled to a 3-1 advantage heading into the half time interval after strikes from Heung-Min Son, Dele Alli and Harry Kane.

Christian Eriksen added a fourth with a smart volley just three minutes into the second period, and while Gylfi Sigurdsson cut the arrears just a few minutes later, there was to be no fightback as Kane and Son added a further goal apiece to confirm Tottenham’s vast superiority.

The result leaves Tottenham in third place, on 42 points, just two shy of champions Manchester City while struggling Everton remain in 11th in 24 points after 18 matches. It will be a good Christmas for Spurs.

MAN OF THE MATCH – Heung-Min Son (Spurs)

There were a number of standout performers for Spurs. Kane was exceptional, as was Alli before he was withdrawn at the break with an injury. Eriksen was also impressive. However, Son was the best of the lot. He marked his performance at Goodison Park with two well-taken goals, but his display was about more than goals. He gave Everton more trouble than any other opposition player, exploiting the space in behind the Toffees’ backline.

PLAYER RATINGS

Everton – Pickford 5, Keane 5, Zouma 5, Coleman 6, Digne 6, Gomes 5, Davies 5, Sigurdsson 7, Walcott 6, Richarlison 5, Calvert-Lewin 6. Subs – Schneiderlin 5, Bernard 5, Tosun 5.

Spurs – Lloris 5, Trippier 6, Alderweireld 6, Sanchez 7, Davies 6, Winks 7, Sissoko 6, Eriksen 8, Dele 7, Son 9, Kane 8. Subs – Lamela 7, Moura 5, Skipp 6.
