The Clone

Krakpor and His Yewvewve Family

The Clone

The last time I was here, I wrote about my cousin who could not account for a large chunk of family funds in his possession and when asked he said he was defecting to another family. I have been away for a long time because that issue had to get to the village for settlement. After he had agreed to pay the said amount within a period of two months, we all came back to Lagos.

Just last week, I was summoned to our family meeting. This time my uncle said: “Krakpor, you know say na you be writa, abeg wetin be clone?(Krakpor, you are the writer, please what is clone?). I was surprised and I asked “Uncle, na where you for hear that one?(Uncle, please where did you hear that word). One thing about us- we answer a question with a question.

Uncle: Na your cousin wey go sell Okuokoko land and when dem ask am to bring money, he say naim clone sell am. {It is your cousin who had sold Okuokoko’s land and when asked for the money, he said it was his clone that sold it)

For the past few days, despite the family beatings and then later begging my cousin is still insisting that it was his clone that sold the land and not him. The buyer has already identified him but he has stuck to his clone story.

My phone has been ringing since morning and it is from my uncle because I told him I will give him the answer to his question today. How do I explain the meaning of a clone to an 80 year old illiterate man?

I need suggestions.
