I have heard of the SITUATION ROOM inside the famous White House or the Capitol. I have heard of the LABOUR ROOM in the maternity ward of hospitals. I heard of the NEWSROOM in newspaper houses where stories, news items, features and interviews are written and sorted out for publication.. I have heard of the OTHER ROOM where some wives “belong”. I have heard of the DARK ROOM in an old photo studio where films are processed….and recently, I heard of the COLD ROOM.
But really, that or this wasn’t my first time of hearing the phrase COLD ROOM where frozen foods/items are stored or preserved. However, the interpretation or code name attached to the latest version of COLD ROOM almost swept me off balance. They say, it is the room where randy male lecturers bargain with female students in the sex for mark or grade negotiations in the famous University of Lagos otherwise known as UNILAG. But I want to believe that UNILAG is not the only university that has a COLD ROOM. There may be COLD ROOMS spread across our major institutions of higher learning.
Many of us pretend as if we are unaware of this kind of heartrending developments even before the COLD ROOM saga of UNILAG played out. It is sad that most of us are hypocrites. If at all, we claim not to know what transpires between “jingolo” lecturers in higher institutions and our female students, we cannot claim to be deaf to the sack of Professor Richard Akindele by the governing board of Obafemi Awolowo University in June 2018 over sex for mark scandal.
Parents have often heard of the word SORTING from their undergraduate children who when requesting for funds to return to school ask for it. It is the code name of money used or meant to settle lecturers who vow to fail them in courses for various reasons.
SORTING is the beginning of the journey to COLD ROOM especially for our female undergraduates who get harassed and threatened by the “jingolo” lecturers.
My pain in all these endless dramas of shame in virtually all facets of our lives is that, undertakers are now in charge of our education. Values are gone, morals are gone….and knowledge is fast disappearing. Each year, we pour put half-baked graduates into the labour market thus crippling the system with a large labour force that has nothing to offer a nation bleeding and asking for youthful ideas, vigour and energy to survive.
Now we shouldn’t be surprised neither should we blame the Director-General of NYSC for his comment few months ago when he said some graduates we churn out cannot read ABC. How on earth can they when truly their brains have been damaged by chilling activities inside the COLD ROOM.
But for how long, do we fold our arms to watch these undertakers destroy what is left of our system and society? In a situation whereby our educational sector is left for vultures to feast on, we cannot boast of a better tomorrow if at all there is any especially with our daughters now used as frozen foods in the COLD ROOM!
