The Game Of Freeze

Memoirs Of Krakpor

The Game Of Freeze

I was walking along one of the streets in Mushin, Lagos state on my way to collect a print job for a client when I saw two kids playing a game. Something caught my attention that made me to stop. One of them said “Freeze” and I turned around to see what the other kid would do. Well nothing happened. He just ran while the other kid chased him.

The way kids play these days was not as fun like we did. I remember when I was in JSS 1 (Junior Secondary School class one) that was when the game of “Freeze” came. I can’t remember who introduced us to the game but it became so popular among us. Everybody within the ages of 8 to 14 loved the game. Freeze involved more than two people. The first person to shout “Freeze” to his/her opponents holds them captive until they are released with the word “Release”. The person will remain in that spot without uttering a word, maintains the posture or position he is caught and whatever he has with him belongs to his captor. He is like a Policeman.

When kids started losing their biscuits and toys, parents began warning their children to stop the game but stubborn ones like me never paid heed to my parents’ warnings until something happened.

On this fateful day, I had committed an offence and disappeared from the house. I was on the run to avoid serious beating from my two elder brothers because I have outgrown spanking. My escape plan was to come back when my father has returned from his office. He was my diplomatic immunity.

As I was entering our premises, Famous my friend came from behind and said “Krakpor, Freeze” so I froze because I had entered the game with him that day. I stood there stunned while he ransacked my pockets. He took my biscuits and my eyes became filled with tears. Famous saw as tears trickled down my cheeks. He burst into a frenzy of laughter. He didn’t understand the reason behind the tears.

Walking towards us were my two elder brothers holding some canes. I looked around to see if my father’s car was in the parking lot. No car and no daddy. My brothers smiled. They could see the disappointment in my eyes. Then it came to me- it was a Wednesday, my father has gone for Elders meeting in the church.  I would have run away but I was still held captive.

The next thing was a sharp pain on my back. One of my brothers had used his cane on my back. I stood there and the useless Ejiro refused to release me. My brothers looked at each other. They were surprised that I did not run. Strokes upon strokes came descending on my back but I still stood there choosing not to cry but allowing a river of tears to flow freely from my eyes.

Ejiro started laughing. He was enjoying the show. I could not stand straight again as my legs started wobbling. I released myself from the “Freeze” stance and took to my heels.

It was the end of “Freeze” game for me. I would have died because of that game that made me not to think properly. As for Famous, I will tell you what I did to him as my own revenge. Catch you next week.
