The Protest Against Bobrisky: A Deviation From The Real Damage To The Nigerian Youths

Nigerian cross dresser Okuneye Idris Olarenwaju popularly known as “Bobrisky” is gradually becoming a cult hero. Last week, some Nigerian youths under  group Nigerian Youths council went on a protest against him for promoting a culture that is not ours. Nigeria is a country without LGBT (Lesbian,Gay,Bisexual and Transgender) rights.

Bobrisky’s birthday party was disrupted by the police and the call for his arrests from the different quarters flew all over social media. A lot of parents are seriously condemning his behavior as a bad influence for the youths.

The actions of Bobrisky are not new to Nigeria. It is a lifestyle he has chosen for himself. Homosexuality is not a part of Nigerian culure, the same way insanity is not a part of the culture. Fighting or protesting against Bobrisky is not the solution. What he needs is psychiatric evaluation by a renowned psychiatrist.

There are so many people today who these same youths see as icons living weird lifestyles that alien to the Nigerian culture. There are those who have influenced youths negatively through their conduct but because they are rich, nothing bad is said about them. The same Nigerian youths have instead emulated their lifestyles.

The Youths Council of Nigeria came out to protest against Bobrisky and some parents coming out to support the youths via social media platforms only showed that this protest is not just selective but orchestrated. Why have the youths as well as parents not come out to protest against cultism, drugs and cyber-fraud popularly known as “yahoo yahoo”?

The real damage that cultism, drug abuse and cyber-fraud have caused in the country is more than that of Bobrisky’s lifestyle. Parents have kept sealed lips on the issues of cyber-fraud because there is serious money involved. They even go as far as going to religious houses to pray for their success but yet are condemning Bobrisky lifestyle.  I have heard a parent say “I dey go spiritual churches and even afa to make Maga pay my son well ( I visit spiritual churches and Islamic clerics to pray that victims will pay my son very well)”. In some families, the youths have become the bread winners and highly respected. They have used money to buy control from their parents.

The spate of cultism among the youths is so devastating that in some regions, 9 out of 10 youths are cultists. Cultism is no longer for the boys alone but also the girls. It is the order of the day. They maim and kill each other any time the hunger for blood arises. Most parents have been reduced to nothing in the eyes of their own children. They take instructions from their wards for fear of being molested or even killed by their children.

Drug related concerns have further damaged our youths and destroyed so many lives but today, how many youths have come out to demonstrate. They will not because it is giving them pleasure. They can only protest against those things that does not give them pleasure.

Children with humble and good upbringing will not deviate from the path which their parents have laid for them. There might be peer pressure but they always find their way back to the right path. Every child with sound upbringing is trained to maintain and respect the family name and not bring shame.

Today, family name no longer occupy the respected position. It has been dragged in the mud. Parents watch their children deviating but say nothing. No behavior starts overnight. Bobrisky might have been showing signs of exhibiting this sort of behavior but it was overlooked. So many parents do not understand their children to notice any strange behaviors or listen to what they are trying to tell them. They are too engrossed with other less important things of life. They have mortgaged their children to other people to act as surrogate parents to them.

It is when parents start doing the right things and taking up their roles as parents instead of delegating it to house-helps, outsiders, schools or their children, that is when societal ills such as cultism, cyber-fraud, homosexuality, weird lifestyles will start to reduce. There is a limit to which these expensive schools can do with the training of your children. The responsibility of the moral areas in a child’s life is on the parents and not just the schools.
