TOP 10 NIGERIAN POLITICIANS IN 2018

The year 2018 is rounding off. It has been a very eventful year politically leading to the 2019 election even with some seven weeks to the end of the year. Some politicians have been headliners (for good or bad) given their activities and deep involvement in issues of national discourse that will shape the future of the country in the next few months leading to the election.
In fact, their actions to say the least will help determine the future of the country especially in the next four years. Some of them actively moved around or are actively moving around while others were like the oracles sited at a reverred location to be consulted by the major players. The “political oracles” stayed put in their domains while others visited to consult them, seek wisdom and direction. Indeed, they played or are playing the role of kingmakers.

10. PROF. YEMI OSINBAJO
The Vice-President stood in for Mr. President while he was away. The brief 10-day medical vacation was indeed very eventful as the polity was heated up by the cold war between the presidency cabal and the leadership of the National Assembly and of course the chieftains of the governing party. It consumed the DSS boss, Lawal Daura.
The VeePee took some far reaching decisions which helped to douse tension and temporarily created stability in the system. This unnoticed success formed part of the fulcrum which the system leverages on as we approach 2019.

9. RABIU MUSA KWANKWASO
Senator Kwankwaso’s defection alongside 15 others to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) marked the beginning of the real heat and pressure on the governing party, All Progressives Congress (APC). He has been pulling the strings in Kano despite strong resistance from Gov. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje. He was declared persona non grata. Part of the strings he pulled is the emergence of his son-inlaw as PDP governorship candidate in Kano State. With the bribe scandal report cum video of Daily Nigerian online newspaper publications rocking Ganduje, it is left to be seen how the APC will survive this scare in Kano.

8. BOLA AHMED TINUBU
At every turbulent and odd time President Muhammadu Buhari called on him to fix things in the APC. Asiwaju is the stabilising factor in his party. He was the reason why PDP could not get Osun State. He installed Adams Oshiomhole as National Chairman of APC after singlehandedly removing John Odigie-Oyegun.
He has been behind Oshiomhole in the fight against Ibikunle Amosun, Rochas Okorocha and Abdulaziz Yari. He is the inner strength of the president and the heart of the APC as things stand.

7. ABUBAKAR ATIKU
He is the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2019 election. This is no mean feat. He did not achieve it without a dogged fight. He consulted wide. He met four former leaders in Ibrahim Babangida, Goodluck Jonathan, Abdulsalami Abubakar and Olusegun Obasanjo. His visit to Ota drew attention and debate. Slowly but steadily his camp managed to convince 12 other presidential aspirants and their teeming delegates that he is the man with the most during the party’s National Convention in Port Harcourt. He now has his eyes fixed on the ultimate prize and going by developments in the APC, it won’t be an overstatement to say, it is within his reach or grab.

6. BUKOLA SARAKI
The Senate President is a cat with nine lives. He has fought several wars since the Muhammadu Buhari administration came on board in 2015. All he has won without a single scratch on his political body from his foes.
His successful battles were the rallying point of the move to rebuild the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by several defectors who had to wait for his move before they followed. Love him or hate him, Saraki proved that he is indeed a political leader across the six geo-political zones.

5. NYESOM WIKE
This is the man on whose crest the PDP got its revival. He is just a governor but has been the rallying point of other PDP governors. He gave most if his party’s chieftains courage. He raised alarm of the moles in the party especially among the 13 presidential aspirants who are “spies and spoilers”. Credit must go to the Rivers State governor for breathing life back into PDP. He was the frontliner who took all the bullets, shoves and pushes to save PDP. It was not for nothing that he hosted the PDP National Convention which proved and announced the true rebirth of the party.

4. GOODLUCK JONATHAN
The former President was simply the life support of the PDP. It was he who held the tattered umbrella under the rain and stormy wind while Nyesom Wike brought the thread and needle to sew and patch the leakages for others to gather under. GEJ is the father of modern or new PDP. Twice he hosted former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He hosted Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki among others before the National Convention of PDP in Port Harcourt.

3. PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI
The building of the APC may be shaking but he remains the foundation giving all hope. He is the rallying point of the party despite all odds. He is the torch bearer of the party trying to whither all storm even as the party is threatened by darkness created by party members following their endless internal wrangling. He is willing to be the last man standing.

2. IBRAHIM BABANGIDA
The former Military-President has proven in the last 11 months like preceding years that irrespective of the fact that he is not loved by many who have not forgiven him for deliberate mistakes of his eight-year rule, he remains a political oracle.
He was severally consulted by many especially most of the 13 presidential aspirants of the PDP leading to the party’s National Convention. It is believed that he influenced the choice of Abubakar Atiku as the presidential candidate of the party alongside former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Olusegun Obasanjo.

1. OLUSEGUN OBASANJO
He is the catalyst. He is the initiator of the revival of most of the 91 political parties which includes the new ones that emerged. He was not initially involved but as the National Convention drew near his home was turned into a Mecca of some sort. Nearly all the PDP Presidential aspirants consulted him. The high point of these consultations was the visit of Abubakar Atiku, his former deputy who mended fence with him through the support of three popular clerics Sheik Ibrahim Gumi, Bishop Matthew Kuka and Bishop David Oyedepo. Obasanjo referred to them as “men of goodwill”.
Obasanjo’s first open letter to President Buhari was the slam and impact that erupted the dusts in the political wrestling ring. It heated the polity. The second letter was the straw that break the camel’s back. It whipped up sentiment as political parties sprang up to give the APC some shoves. The PDP cashed on this for its revival which was a huge success but not without Obasanjo’s double visits to Otuoke to meet his former godson GEJ where they both discussed and pushed for all forces to be combined. This was the trumpet blown to announce the mass defection of stalwarts of the APC to PDP.

Whoever ignores Baba as Obasanjo is called is doing so at his or her political peril. Obasanjo remains an enigma and a force to reckon with in Nigeria’s political environment or atmosphere any day and anytime. He has helped to shape the face of things to come. We await the outcome of the 2019 election to fully measure and assess his political prowess.
