Who Is Stationery Stores Greatest Player Of All Time?

This question came up in a recent football forum cum discussion among friends who decided to look back from the 50s till date. The argument ensued when one of us told Yours Sincerely that players of the “old” era or “old skool” are far better than today’s footballers most of whom are not talented but are just average players who rely on self belief and determination to succeed.

The discussion suddenly focused on Stationery Stores Football Club of Lagos for holding the record of recruiting grassroots players and turning them into superstars. This policy gave the team the famous tag POKU LOWO E meaning “IT IS VERY CHEAP”.

The cheap recruitment or players end up as superstars as the club become vgiant killers each season especially in the revered FA Cup. Flaming Flamingoes as the team is called is one of the oldest clubs in Nigeria with a high fan base even as it is not in the NPFL at the moment.

The club has won laurels and produces stars who featured in the national team at different times. Stationery Stores FC has represented Nigeria in the continent on several occasions. It introduced the open screening exercise whereby it’s fans assist the coaches in picking or selecting players for signing and registration for any season.

In the course of the argument, we went down memory lane to list out few of the players we could remember who made headlines during their time. Four players were selected among the long list. But I will not mention their names as I want readers to decide from the list below even as they are free to add more names of past stars of Super Stores.

Who among these players is the greatest of all time from or of Stationery Stores FC? We must consider the following factors. What they won with the club, the legacies they left behind in the team, how long they served the club, how popular they were among the fans of their era and the impact they made in the national team through the club among others.

Names like Tony Igwe, Sam Opone, Peter Fregene, Austin Ofokwu, Peter Aneke, Haruna Ilerika, Yomi Peters, Wakilu Oyenuga, Peter Rufai, Abdul Sule, Abiodun Obafemi, Ike Shorunmu, James Tombiri, Ganiu Ajide, Olumide Banjo, Audu Ibrahim, Richmond Gbontir, Tarila Okorowanta, Arthur Moses, Yisa Alabi, Benjamin James, Godwin Obinyan, Joe Ashinze, Collins Ebitimi, Taiwo Oloyode, Eddy Okoyomo, Peter Obanor, Fela Tom-Dollar etc comes to mind when talking about greatest players of the club.
