Why Nigerians Will Continue To Receive Ill Treatment outside Their Shores

The Nigerian Issues

Why Nigerians Will Continue To Receive Ill Treatment outside Their Shores

I was with a friend who told me about an encounter he and his friends experienced in Dubai. They had gone for a retreat and to have fun they went to a beach. They were dancing and catching their fun when a group of white girls joined them. In no time, they had engaged in chatting. He said for 30 minutes the atmosphere was cheerful until their new found friends asked which of the African countries they were from. According to him, the mere mention of Nigeria turned the atmosphere sour.

“No, Nigerians are scammers”, “It’s a pity cheerful guys like you are from Nigeria” were some of the words they said before moving to join some other people.

Nigerians are now known more for the bad sides than the good. We are no longer accepted irrespective of the great feats we have accomplished in other aspects of life. Nobody trusts the Nigerian man or woman. Everybody sees Nigerians as either a fraudster or scammer. How did we get to this position?

Every country has its own share of societal ills such as drug dealers, fraudsters, scammers etc. Nigeria does not make up to 10% of the scammers or fraudsters in the world but yet we are most notable. Nobody wants to identify with them. It has got so bad that even some social media platforms have blacklisted Nigerian IPs (Internet Protocols) from having access. The moment you try to get into a convenient chat with a non-Nigerian, you are branded or seen as a scam.

Recently, Nigerians experienced serious xenophobic attacks from South Africa which led to loss of lives and destruction of properties worth millions of naira. One of the major reasons for this bad treatment of Nigerians is their lack of humility and pompous behavior. Nigerians love to show off to everyone around them. They want to be worshiped and seen as the one who has made it all.

In Nigeria, a man who is struggling to feed himself will want to show everyone that he has arrived when he manages to get money from a job. In one day, he will use it to entertain friends and blow it all if he finds himself in a party. Most Nigerians are boastful. In Nigeria people respect you for the amount of money you have to throw away than the amount of knowledge you are ready to share. Everybody wants to become overnight hence their involvement in any means that will bring that quick money.

It is like a DNA trait that gets activated the moment there is money.

What you will do in your country and get away with is not the same as being in another man’s country. You go to another man’s territory and you start to live a life that is not desirable. You start to take away their women because you have money and then become boastful as if you are the owner and then you expect them to be happy with you? Nobody does that. They will never be happy and will wait for the right time to strike. There was a video that went viral of some young men in party spraying lots of American dollars. They called themselves the dollar families. Rumor has it that they are among those hunted by the FBI and EFFC.

Nigerians love to draw attention and create impressions of overflowing wealth because of the kind of lifestyle they have adopted. As long as they continue in this fashion, innocent Nigerians will continue to face rejection outside their shores.
