Will Nollywood ever release a Super Hero movie like Kaptain Afrika?

The Nigerian Movie Industry Today

Will Nollywood ever release a Super Hero movie like Kaptain Afrika?

Hannah ran as fast as her little legs could carry her. She did not even know where she was going. All she knew was that something within her was telling to keep on running. She was just twelve years old. She suddenly stopped. She was at the edge of a cliff. What was she going to do? She could hear the voices of the three men who were after her drawing closer and closer. Then she remembered the small chain on her right wrist given to her by her grandfather. She rubbed it three times and there was a bright light. She could not believe her eyes. The man in white with a cape and a mask stood before her. The story was real.

Everything you just read is my own imagination of what I look forward to in the present Nigerian movies. In my teen days, I was a fan of Kaptain Afrika, a super hero cartoon story on the back of the Vanguard Newspaper by Andy Akman.  Terror Muda was also a super hero comic story that also made wave back then. The activities of Terror Muda could be likened the Ghost Rider except that he was not dead and on fire. He was a bike man who was always standing up for others especially the oppressed. The Nigerian movie industry known as Nollywood has been around for years with new technology at their reach to make good super hero movies but yet they still stick to movies a bit higher than stage plays.

The only Nigerian super hero movie that made wave was Sango. Sango is a thunder god in the Yoruba mythology and has the same powers as Thor, a Marvels Studio comic hero. There was a sci-fi movie also attempted which featured three Albinos known as Orange men from the Limca Company adverts in the 90s. Ever since then not even an animated movie has been attempted.

Just as Marvel Studio started Captain America as a comic so also Andy Akman started with Kaptain Afrika. While Captain America was an enhanced human so also was Kaptain Afrika except that Kaptain Afrika could fly and had similar powers to DC Comics Superman. Captain America and Superman have graduated from just comic strips to block buster movies while our own Kaptain Africa has disappeared.

Nollywood has a big pool of super heroes or gods stories they can develop and make into movies just like their counterparts in other parts of the world. Super hero movies are selling like wide fire in cinemas across the nation. The first super hero movie Black Panther released in February this year grossed millions of naira in Nigerian cinemas when it was thrown open for viewing. Former vice president Abubakar Atiku even went to the cinemas to see Black Panther. This year alone, Marvel Studios has grossed 4.035 billion dollars worldwide from the release of  just three of movies.

When are we going to have our own comic stories come to life in movies and we all queue to purchase tickets to watch them?
